This 1990 22RE that I've had for the last 4 months is the smoothest running one I've ever owned with only 101K miles. The only issue is that it seems on a warm start.(after the truck has been driven and sat for 10-15 minutes) I can hear some valve chatter for a second or two once in a while. It sounds like it takes the oil a second or two to get to the top. I am wondering if this is normal for a 22re as every other one I have owned has been ten times louder and I probably couldn't have heard the noise if I tried. On a cold start you can't hear it it's only occasionally on a warm start. Should I switch to 10W40 from my usual 10W30 or maybe try a 5W30 synthetic? I'm using 10W30 valvoline right now and it uses no oil between changes.

Lots use factory filters as they have the proper check valve to minimize dry starts.

I'm using the factory filters, it only happens occasionally so I guess I won't really worry about it.

Did you replace your timing gear like you were talking about a while back? Could be some broken guides. Those are notorious on 22res for causing loud start ups. It may be worth pulling the valve cover and having a look with a flashlight. Did this noise just recently start? If your guides are ok I would say adjust the valves, bolt it back together and go wheeling!

Haven't done that yet and it's cold now, but it doesn't sound like a timing chain. I guess I should pull the cover off when we get a warmer day here.
