22RE Total Timing Help

Hi,

I have a 91 22RE, I have been running it for the past few months with timing jumper installed and a constant advance of 5-8 degrees BTDC. It doesn't run great, surprise surprise.

When I remove the jumper the timing jumps to approx 20-30 degrees BTDC and I loose almost all power.

1)When the timing is set to 5 degrees btdc with the jumper installed, what should the timing advance too when the jumper is removed?

2)Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I have replaced and tested my throttle position sensor.

The FSM for your truck tells you. A little research goes a long way.

Anywho, it should jump to 12-14 degrees

I would also pull the valve cover and make sure that the chain didn't jump a tooth. The information to do that is all found in the FSM or even on this website posted hundreds of times before by other posters.

Check out threads that include timing chain replacement and/or timing.

Yes thank you. I have done extensive research online before I posted.

I have removed and replaced the timing cover to replace some seals, The chain is lined up correctly.

Problem still unknown.

In that case have you checked to see if the distributor was put in properly?

Yes, If I move one tooth either way it is too far advanced or retarded.

Just to confirm you have made sure that it is in TDC when you checked it and both pulley's reflect the correct timing mark right?

If that's the case it still makes me think that you are off a tooth.

The only other thing I can think of is the TPS but if you are able to put the jumper on and have it stay at 5 degrees then you can rule out the TPS.

When you have the jumper on does it stay right on 5 degrees or does it jump around a bit?

If it does jump around and your timing marks are correct then the TPS is not adjusted correctly.

I only have two pulleys, and the mark is ONLY on the larger of the two, the one closer to the engine.

YEah but you have timing marks on your camshaft sprocket that needs to be adjusted to spec. Look at the FSM.

You're using an adjustable timing light that can tell you the timing jumps to 20-30 deg without the jumper? The timing marks won't let you see that much.

What trouble codes do you have stored?
