22re timing chain swap - rtv/gasket?

Hey guys, I'm going to be doing the 4-part timing chain job on a 22re (timing chain, timing cover, oil pump, water pump) and I had a question about best practices.

When I spoke to Tod from Engnbldr about doing the kit, he mentioned putting rtv on the block, then the gasket, then more rtv over that, then the cover.

However, in the kit, I'm not even seeing a gasket for the timing cover. Do you just use rtv? How about the gaskets for the oil/water pump - do you just use a gasket, or do you do a combination of rtv and gasket, and is it in a certain order?

I have the same question about the oil pan (which will have to be pulled) and the valve cover. The oil pan gasket is cork-like material and the valve cover gasket is just a rubber seal. Do you just do the gasket, or the combo rtv and gasket, or just the rtv?

I've heard recommended the Permatex ultimate black (max oil resistance) sealant, or do you just have a more highly recommended product? I'm just trying to do my homework so I don't screw it up

And the timing mark is 0* when torn down, and 5* when put back together, or 0*?

Thanks all, I really appreciate it!

Fyi you can get the timing cover off without removing the oil pan.

The driver's side guide grenaded itself so I have to drop the pan and fish out the bits.

You should have got 2 gaskets for the timing cover, each side. I only put RTV at the top corners where the head meets and the bottom corners where the pan meets. I put white grease on the block to hold the gasket on. I have done at lease 5 timing chains this way and it has worked good. If you get RTV stuff inside the engine it could migrate to the tensioner oil hole you will have chain problems. It's called a gasket for a reason.
Just me 2cents.

You should have received gaskets. I put a very thin bead of Permatex Ultra Grey on each side of the gasket. When I say thin I mean a bead about 2mm.

I also used Permatex Ultra Grey on the oil pan, with no gasket on the oil pan.

This was about 10 years ago, and it has never leaked.

My $0.02...like they say, should be gaskets. I used Permatex ultra grey, I didn't disturb the pan or the head, pieces of plastic chain guide are down there somewhere. I don't know if they float in oil, and I doubt they would slide around in the pan. I don't worry. 25,000 miles since...no leaks, no issues. Good luck on yours.
p.s. I couldn't think why the oil pump needed replacing, and water pump was only a couple years old, so I didn't.

I'm in the same boat, as you can see here and I have the same kit on the way. I'll get it Monday, I will post up gasket counts and such so we can figure out how this install works.

JJ up here just enlightened me to 4Crawler's link on the same repair, and 4Crawler mentions timing cover gasket starting in step 38: *CLICKY*

My 4pc timing set from engnbldr came in today. I don't see a gasket with the timing cover itself, but I do see a lot of gaskets packed in with the timing kit. I haven't broken open the timing kit yet to see where everything goes - maybe the cover gaskets are in there?

Let me know what you've found out so far, I'll lay out the kit and call Tod up and chat, he's wicked helpful from what I've ever heard.

Finished going through the kit, there are a lot of gaskets in the timing chain box, looks like everything is there to me.
