22re shifting problems
hey guys thanks for reading my post. i have a 1994 toyota pickup 2wd 5 speed 22re. ever since i got the truck it has always been really hard to put it in gear from a stop. it doesnt grind when i try but when i try to put it in gear it goes about half way but wont go any further until a couple of trys. i was wondering if it is the shifter seat and bushings or the syncros gone bad. another problem i have is every now and then the clutch goes weak and wont shift in or out of gears so i have to turn it off pump the clutch and it works fine for quite a while(usually a couple of weeks) i was wondering if this is the master cylinder, slave cylinder, or just air in the system. i looked at the master cylinder and the fluid level is were it should be and there are no leaks i can find. any help would be greatly appreciated

I had a similar problem with my old 1988 22re 4x4. My brakes wouldn't work all the time, I was just losing pressure and had to pump them once or twice and they would work fine again for a while. Then they would quit again. I had to replace my master cylinder and everything worked as though it was brand new again.
If it was air in the system, it would feel squishy and your clutch most likely wouldn't engage at all.
I don't think have any cracks in your lines, so check your slave cylinder and master cylinder. Since you say you can pump it a few times and it works again, I would guess master cylinder is going out.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any synchros for first gear, (somebody correct me if that's not right). If pumping the clutch makes the problem go away temporarily that sounds like a hydraulic problem. Can you see any fluid leaking anywhere? I would flush it and refill/bleed the system. If the problem is still there after that replace the cylinder. If the problem is still there after that replace the clutch. After that......I don't know .

Also check the bracket that your clutch attached to inside the cab - get down in the footwell and depress it and look above the pedal to see if it's cracking at all. If so you can replace it or weld it.

thanks for the help guys. i checked the bracket and it looks fine. i think ill just replace the master cylinder since thats what everyone seems to think it is. i just glad its so cheap to get a new one. and as for the shifting proplems i took the shifter out and both the seat and bushing were bad so i went with my brother to a local 4x4 shop who had them. shifts great now
