22RE Replaced, No Start
Alright this is actually for an 85 truck but I'm more likely to get a good responce here. My old 22RE pretty much exploded inside so I needed a replacement. I picked up a low km 22R for a couple hundred bucks that came out of a 85 2WD pickup. Anyway I swapped everything over and got it dropped back in the truck and all wired up. When I turned he key it would turn over but no start. Good spark on all four plugs but didn't seem to be any fuel. After that I decided to take it to a shop to see if they could figure it out. He got fuel going (forget what the problem was) and it would start up just fine althought it ran a little rough (pretty sure the timing is off a little but not worried about that right now). So I decided I'd take it home this weekend.
So this is where we are now... I stopped in to pick it up and it was parked outside. He had taken it out of the shop, drove it up and down the driveway a couple times ad then parked it. I hop in it to drive it home and... no start, it was at least sputtering now thought. So we figure it must of been the cold that did it. It's running quite rich (my muffler actually exploded because of excess fuel in it.
My question is, what could the cold trigger to cause this?

so you went from a 22re back to a 22r..
did you hear the motor run before this??
is there any vaccum lines for the 4wd you missed??
carb might be gummed up if it sat for a whle b4 you installed....
did you put a non efi gas tank in?>? did it have bad gas??

I can say with some authority (search Sin91 engine) that at least the > 85 22r and 22re long block assemblies are the same: I swapped an 88 22r long block into a 91 22re chassis and had no problems what so ever.
If you put all the 22re hardware from your truck on to the 22r donor, there shouldn't be an issue.
A few things...
The 22r is carb'd and has an eccentric on the end of the cam to drive the fuel pump, which the 22re doesn't need since the fuel pump is electric. So I assume you removed the 'eccentric' and replaced it with the 'shim' from your 22re and properly blocked and sealed the fuel pump mount in the head with the plate from your 22re.
You changed your valve cover from your 22re over to the 22r engine so your PCV system hoses would line up and work.
You changed the hard coolant lines from the 22re over to the 22r block (the steel pipes that wrap around the back of the engine).

I did swap all the hardware over. It's now a 22RE just the block and head are from the 22R. The truck's sitting outside now. I picked it up from the shop today and it started right up althought the timing still seems to be off I'm not to worried about that right now. Hopefully the cold doesn't cause it to not start anymore
