22re question

I found a truck for sale that owner says doesn't run due to water in oil and oil in coolant.
My question is: Could this be a head gasket on the 22re or do they often crack heads also? Could there be much damage like rings and bearings etc if it was driven this way long?
Shouldn't the truck at least start briefly if nothing else is bad?
I've had a hard time finding a 2wd extra cab so I was wondering if this would be a way to get the truck cheap and fix a head or gasket problem
Any and all advice is appreciated!

Yeah that sounds like a blown head gasket. Hopefully the seller will give you a straight answer on how long he drove it like that. If he shut it off right after he noticed it the bottom end might be alright. Even if the head is cracked you can get a new one fairly cheap.

1994, He wants $1400 for it, the interior looks good but dirty and the front bumper and one finder are a little crunched up. Does this sound a little high for a 2wd with a suspect engine or not?

Blue book it under broken
Really I don't know where people come off trying to sell something broken for top dollar. You can't test drive it so there is no way to attempt to tell if other crap is on the fritz. If it was such a cheap easy fix the old timer would have done it to sell it. I'd wait and watch it from a distance, then low ball him till he screams just on principle

The cost of course depends on who does the labor and what the problem is, range I'd guess from $100 to $2500: A timing chain cover/ chain all the way to someone replacing the engine for you. You decide.

x2 Well said. Water in the coolant is the worse way for head gaskets to blow. No way is good, but if it blows the other way, you can still get home.

Here's the deal: Price that thing as if the motor was a total loss. An independent "shop" level replacment will probably run $3000.

As it's got water in the coolant, it's likely that the water was pumped around as oil. Water doesn't prevent metal on metal contact very well, so 50/50 chance that it's going to need more than a head gasket.

That gets my vote too as a blind guess.

And I also bet the idiot kept driving it long enough to screw the main bearings too, and it will probably knock like hell if you do the repair and crank it up.

It's worth $300-500 imo... I'd write the engine off and drop in a rebuild.

He's in Louisville, Ky. The truck has 134,000 miles.
Thanks for all the responses, It does make sense that if oil actually made it into the radiator, it could be pretty bad.

I did a rebuild on my 22re and bored it .030 over, put in new pistons.bought a new pre-assembled head with new camshaft, whole gasket set, water and oil pump. I would say that I have $1500 in it . The majority of the parts came from Rock industries, very reasonable prices.I saved $200 by doing the assembly of the motor myself, not that hard really,.....just read the fsm carefully.
