22re problems after washing
so i just bought an 87 4runner (22re) it was running good, but the engine bay was all spalashed with oil, so i decided to degrease and pressure wash it. I covered the alt. and the air filter with bags as i always do. But i guess the engine was to hot because the exhaust mani. cracked. I drove it home and it seemed to sputtering (hesitating) and is having a hard time picking up. I changed the manifold. then i changed the plugs n wires. also changed the dist. cap and rotor. The check engine is not on and im still having the same problem.

I am no expert but i have read that the ECU can get wet which is located on the passenger side by the firewall(i think). Symptoms I have read are on par with your issues.
Hopefully this can lead someone with more specific knowledge to help out. Or at least, you can give that problem a specific search.
Cheers!

i dunno man, cman and i had this discussion a while back. for me, a re-wrap of the factory harness from the ignitor back to the ecu was the kicker. started off as sputter when wet, to dead when wet, to dead when dry. throwing code 14 (no igf) and the occassional tps code (was it 41?).
first replace the o-ring between the distributor body and cap. a few bucks and a few days out from the dealer

Could also be your TPS.
blow it out with air/heat gun....or remove and let sit in dry rice overnight.
Same thing happened in my datsun after an engine bath...would not rev over 2000 rpm.
Water makes it think that it's at redline when it's not even close....hence the "limp mode"
Good luck!

Could be the TPS, as mentioned. Could also be around the igniter / coil assembly.
You could try disconnecting the plugs around the igniter and distributor and give them a bit of time to dry out.

eeesh. its been a while since the bath now. try disconnecting the tps plug and see if that helps.
also, one time i held the flapper vane in the afm open and had my friend start it. could have been coincedence cause that never really worked again. great way to see if your fuel pump turns on though
