22re no power, BAD HESITATION New HG
Hey everyone...please HELP!! I have a 22re that was just rebuilt 10,000 miles ago. This past week I noticed that the coolant level was going down, then the exhaust started to smell funny (like burning antifreeze). Then, over the past two days or so, I noticed that the truck was loosing power. It was bogging down and not accelerating until I had the gas to the floor, then it would take off as if one of the cylinders miraculously jumped to life. Head gasket - right? Well, that's what I just got done doing, even though I just did it 10,000 miles ago. It is STILL doing the same thing. No power/acceleration until gas pushed to floor. The only thing that seemed to help was advancing the timing (way past specs). I don't know if this just dumped more gas in and covered up the problem or if the timing is screwed up or what. Does anybody have any ideas??? It does not seem to be burning coolant after the HG job though.

Sounds like you, or whoever did the rebuild, didn't do something right. Maybe they didn't torque the head bolts down enough. Or the head was warped before the HG replacement. There are a lot of possibilities.

I torqued them to what my Haynes manual said - 58lbs. I just took the cat off thinking that might be it but no luck - still no power/acceleration and hesitation until pedal is pushed to floor. I checked the plug gap too that is ok. Also has new plugs, wires, cap, rotor.

Possibly a cracked block, or cracked head ,did they pressure test the head when they rebuilt it, they normally don't unless you request it. Possibly warped deck,or head. before you tear it down again do a compression test to isolate location of problem.

Has 160lbs on all cylinders. I just talked to a mechanic and he said check to make sure that the timing on the cam and crank are on the right teeth. It does not appear to be burning any more coolant though since I redid the HG, maybe there was more than 1 problem here?

The timing chain cover is fine as well as the oil. I just got done putting the chain one link clockwise on the cam sprocket (instead of having to take off the timing cover) and it helped a little bit, but there is still hesitation upon acceleration. There is also only a very slight "jolt" of power now when pedal is pushed to floor. It seems that the issue gets worse as the truck warms up. Maybe I should put the chain forward another link on the camshaft sprocket? IDEAS??

very important to re-torque after 500 mi or so after hg job, make sure yur tdoc and that cam pin is @ 12:00 when placing head on the block for proper timing allignment, sounds like you may be off a tooth, or ummm.....maybe you did have a head/block that wasnt true(meaning not decked properly). You should not have these problems 10k into a QUALITY rebuild.

Yes I have checked both the valve and ignition timing. 5*BTDC with e1 and te1 jumped. The different colored chain link was properly lined up to the dot on the sprocket and everything was at 12:00. EVERYTHING WORKED FOR 10000 MILES - I don't get it. The only thing I haven't checked is the crankshaft sprocket position. I would assume it is ok since the mark on the flywheel is a 0 degrees at TDC and everything is at 12:00. After moving the chain one link ahead, the thing started sucking in coolant again and you could smell it and see it boiling out of the manifold...I am going to try drilling a hole in the radiator cap so the system does not get pressurized. I do not see how these two problems are inter-related (hesitation and loosing coolant) if compression is ok and timing is set properly. Maybe there are really two problems here? Also, the head was completely done over before the first rebuild. Thanks for letting me know that i need to re-torque the bolts though.
