22re with no air tube on exhaust manifold why? Is it 22r?

I bought a used engine from a guy for my 94 4runner 22re sr5 5sp 4wd and he said the engine was from a 92 pick up . So, it came with no efi manifold which he told me about so I figured no big deal, just bolt mine on. The 22re sticker wasn't on it. The exhaust manifold has no air tube and I didn't notice that when he dropped the engine off at night. So, then the guy I'm getting to change the engine for me says, its a 22r. I don't know how well he knows his stuff, but I'm seeing some red flags here. So, any ideas why it has no air tube? Is it really a 22r or is there a difference between 92 and 94 with this? How do you tell a 22r from a 22re with the efi stripped off and some other things? Is there engine block serial number code system to figure out the year and model? If I paid 100 bucks I wouldnt care but he said the head was new and all was redone in there. So, if it is a 22r, then he probably never rebuilt the head etc and Im getting scammed. any ideas before I get all my parts put on and the engine dropped in

a 22r is just a carbureted version. There should be no real difference as long as the port configuration is the same.

Seems to me that even carb'd 22Rs had air injection though.

So far all I can figure out is that the exhaust ports are/could be different. ie pear shaped for 22re and the 22r manifold would block off part of the port of a 22re Some 22re's had the air tube ports blanked off also. It makes no sense why some have them and some don't unless it has to do with environmental regulations for different countries.

I saw a 92 22re with it in this forum so I`m concerned. I know I can make the block work, but the fella said besides the efi manifold and the wiring, the engine was supposed to be ready to slide in and that is was a semi-rebuilt 22re, not an old worn out 22r which it starting to look like. We`ll find out more when we take the oil pan off and have a look inside...

All the 22r's and 22re's from 85-95 should be the same from the head to the block, camshaft included. The only differences would be the 22re has a fuel pump block-off plate and the 22r has fuel pump eccentric on the end of the camshaft, and the oil pan and oil pickup are different between 2wd and 4wd.
Beyond that they are interchangeable.

If you have the manifold from your 94, just remove the manifold from the 92 engine and bolt your 94's manifold up to it.
