Lightbulb 22re mileage theories

I had an '87 4 runner 22re that used to get me 17-23 mpg when I was in the navy in Silverdale WA. I sold that one and had a jeep moment, when it dawned on me that I had spent as much fixing jeep problems as I spent for the heap (that's how I've decided I'm saying jeep from now on) i sold it and bought my '89 pickup and moved to South Dakota not long after. For the last couple of years I've spent hour upon hour making sure everything on it was as close as I could get it to 1989 condition and I could only get 23 max on a good day and most days the mileage was down around 14-17. What finally occured to me is that back in Silverdale I was always driving 60 mph or less and here in South Dakota I'm normally doing 65 to 80 leaving my toyota pickup w/ mileage that is beaten by my v8 suburban and rivaled by my powerstroke. When I slow it down to about what the national speed limit was in 1989 I see respectable mileage. I've heard folks brag about 22r and 22re 4x4's getting near 30mpg but as far as I can tell that is folklore. If you know something I'm missing here I would like to hear it or if you know of some aftermarket mod (other than an engine swap) that will get killer mileage I would like to hear it also.

It's not folklore. My dad has an 87 pickup 22r with 350K+ miles and averages better than 29mpg. He drives like an old fart though.

Is that 2wd or 4wd? It is very common for the 2wd to get near 30mpg.

I can get nearly 30 miles per gallon out of my 2 wheel drive, but the best I can do is get 22, maybe 23 in my 4 wheels and that is driving EASY, but 18-20 with normal, highway speed driving.

To the OP: What are you running for exhaust? I saw an improvement going to 2.25" cat-back, and more with the header. If you're running the stock 1.75" you're probably choking the poor girl.
