I have an 88 22re and it has always idle a bit rough but lately it has started to stall while just idling. it runs fine if you are giving it gas but occassionally it will just stall out while you are sitting there idling. I have tried adjusting the idle screw and there are no codes being thrown. I noticed the battery and brake lights were coming on so i ordered some brushes for the alternator but do you think that would be the problem. thanks for any help

I know you're going to hate to hear this but you might want to take a couple of hours and do some searching on this site. I have almost the same problems on an 86 22re and it could be a handfull of things. I'm planning on cleaning the Throttle Body this weekend and eliminating the Dash Pot to see if that helps. I'm also going to run some sort of injector/valve cleaner through a tank of fuel also.

I'll let you know what happens so maybe your fix will be easier.

when was the last major tune up, complete with air and fuel filter change. without some help, we, i might suggest the muffler bearing or battery gaskets could be the cause. you can check the TPS with an ohm meter.

it was just rebuilt around 10k ago. I just recently ran some fuel injector cleaner through it. also when you take the dash pot off, do you just remove the little vacuum line or what. thanks for yalls help and i will keep yall posted.

Do the rpms drop with you outside the truck or only when you're at a stop light with your foot on the brake pedal? I know this sounds strange but read my post "22re surging problem SOLVED" and you'll know why I asked.

either way they drop. it doesnt matter if i am in the truck or out of it.

Ok. One more easy one. I talked to a tech today who mentioned that sometimes the 22re will idle rough, or change idle on its own, if the oil fill cap on the valve cover isn't tightened enough or is leaking slightly. He says the motor will build pressure, as is should, and if the cap is faulty (i.e. cracked, not tightened, leaking) it will "vent" enough pressure to change the idle.

That might not be your problem but it's an easy check and pretty cheap fix if that's the case.

Hope this helps. If not I'll keep digging for us both.

Oh and one more thing might be a cracked or split vac line. I HATE chasing vacuum (spelling?) leaks but a couple of feet of hose is a heck of a lot cheaper than most of the other probable causes.

that is true. i thought about doing vacuum lines as well. hopefully we can figure this out together. also does yours actually stall or just idle rough

Number one, clean the throttle body.
Number 2 check for vaccum leaks, that includes the oil filler cap.

One of the two should do it at minimum cost.

Mine doesn't stall, it just idles rough.
