I doubt that a consumer GPS is any more accurate than a stock production vehicle's odometer. The biggest source of errors I see is in the user's method/calculations. It's not hard to gauge odometer error with mile markers and take that error into account when figuring fuel economy...

Are you saying a production vehicle speedometer is more accurate than a GPS? I have to 100 percent disagree on that one. Automakers don't install accurate gauges on their vehicles, why do you think some don't even have numbers on them?

I don't know....is that what I said?

Yet we're talking about odometers....which have numbers.

Yes you did. True odometers have numbers and I have yet to see a stock vehicle with the odometer 100 percent accurate. Some are close, but not 100 percent.

A good running 22re 4x4 stock truck should get low 20's average in my experience. I have a friend who averages higher but he has a 15 mile freeway commute with virtually no traffic. And that's most of his driving. Most of us in the real world get to go through the ears more than twice on our commute. And GPS IS PROBABLY WAY MORE ACCURATE THAN 85% OF FACTORY STUFF. Even 80's and older rigs were considered to be +/- 10% from the factory from what I heard. Just my stinky opinion.

1986 Toyota Pickup 4x4 stock tires 207000 miles on dogomatic and 1000 miles on rebuilt 22re with ported heads 18.5 mpg avg combo driving.
Trani swap soon hopefully bumps up to low-mid 20’s.

1993 Pickup all stock, average 28 daily.(Pretty rural, but go through my gears more than twice for sure) Best I've gotten was 33.94 on the interstate running 63ish windows cracked, no ac. I'm 16 also.(Might make a difference)

22RE gas mileage

The best I've ever gotten on any of my Toyota trucks is about 15 mpg.

Anywhere from 15 to 25ish mpg in my 94 2wd auto stock 22re pickup. Still learning how to optimize the mpg.

Just checked mine for the first time over 190 miles of combined highway and stop and go. 22mpg. Will check an all highway run next.

I just rebuilt the 22re in my '88 'BlueRunner'. The new engine has about 1300 miles on it now and I've checked a couple tanks during breakin.

Plenty stop and go and short runs up to 65 mph. 5 speed tranny ,4.10 gears, and 31 inch tires has given right at 24mpg on both tanks calculated.

My '87 'JunkRunner' that is down for engine replacement now because of stripped headbolt, regularly gave 22mpg with 290,000miles on the clock. Same running gear as BlueRunner above.

Millball's post reminded me to add 4.10s and 31"s. My odo reads under by a tenth per mile so i compensated by adding 1mile per every ten miles traveled.

24 to 25 are great! That's estimated MPG of brand-new trucks in the 80's
I'm getting 19 to 21 MPG (1 or 2 kayaks loaded on top), but that's before correction for 235-75R15 tires, not stock 225's.

1987 4wd SR5, 5-speed manual, 265/75r15's on factory alloy rims, stock height, 210k miles. Factory 4:10 gearing, I believe. Leaky exhaust manifold. I run about 16mpg in town and get up to about 20-21 on the highway.

Just curious, I haven't been there since the 1980's... what are the highway speeds there in Hawaii?

Freeways are usually 55 mph or lower, some places in town the freeway speed is 45mph. Some highway speeds are 45 or lower like Kamehameha and Farrington Highways. Streets usually 25-35 mph. Similar on the neighbor islands (Maui, Hawaii, Kauai, etc.) If you come for a visit, be prepared our roads are riddled with potholes and rutting. We are now #1 in bad roads and close to #1 in traffic (Honolulu).

You think tires 225 over 235 tires really makes a difference? I know skinnier tires create less drag and are lighter, but with that amount how much better fuel economy can be had?

92' 4x4 22re 5speed.

Would anyone know the size of the gas tank for a 92 4x4 22re truck? I've done some research and keep hearing it could be a 13 gal or a 17.2 gal tank. Most sites say all 4x4 22re are 17.2 gal tank, but some say that it could be a 13 gal tank depending on the year. I bought this truck 4 days ago and haven't purchased gas for yet, and I am very curious if my MPG is decent or awful.
