22re driving me crazy!

Its a 89 toyota pickup with a 5 speed and 22re. Problem seems to occur at random but if I try to drive for any lenght of time it will eventually happen. It idles goofy and goes up and down. When I drive if I go over half throttle in any gear it will start breaking up and check engine light flickers. If it dies or I shut it off when this happens it will not start again unless I give it a shot of starting fluid. Then it will fire up and run again. I replaced the fuel filter, spark plug wires and the cap and rotor, tps and air flow sensor where recently replaced. Its very frustrating cause it will be driving fine then do this then drive fine again later.

any help would be appreciated thanks

Did you pull the ECM codes to see what error the CEL was giving you?

Have you ever replaced the fuel pump? It doesn't sound exactly like the issue I had before I had to replace mine but it does sound like a fuel delivery problem.

Check your raidator fluid, when my throttle started jumping it was my head gasket that had blown or had a leak and there was exhaust in the raidator fluid. Have someone test your fluid for exhaust gases.

I got a code 14 but it was still getting spark. I don't know if its the fuel pump or not I jumped the Fp and b+ terminals and could hear the fuel pump running when the ignition is on but it still does the same thing even with the fuel pump terminals jumped.

When is the last time you changed your plug wires? The insulation wears thin quicker on cheaper wires, too. They'll look o.k. or possibly dry-rotted, but they'll be too thin to keep them properly insulated from each other.

i replaced the plug wires and it didn't help at all. I believe the problem is the pickup coil in the distributor it tested fine cold but I tested it again when it was warmed up and started running badly and the ohms weren't in spec so I ordered a new one and hopefully it will be fixed finally.

So did the new pickup coil fix your problem? Just wondering so in case anyone does a search they'll have a few possiblities narrowed down. Hope it did fix it, though. It's nice when it's something minor.

I say fuel pump. It can be running and not putting out the pressure or the flow thats needed.

The same problem happened a few times in my 1990. It even happened when I went for a test drive before I bought it... I didn't try to figure it as I have another good running 22RE that I want to install in it when this one dies (or maybe before!). The "check engine" light stays off when driving.
