22re cam timing question

Ok, I just put my new timing chain kit from Engbldr on tonight and after lining everything up thought I had to move the cam 4 or 5 degrees to get the cam gear on. It all went together fine but as I did it dawned on me that the old chain had the shiney link off one tooth on the cam gear. The chain was stretched, gears worn a bit, guides broken off, and tensioner very worn. Timing cover worn through, of course.

So my question is, could the old chain have jumped a tooth and the truck still run very well? Before I started the project I had 180, 175, 165, 165 compression dry, with throttle wide open. If the chain did not jump a tooth, then it might be possble that the prior mechanic lined up the gears correctly but had the chain off 1 tooth on both sprockets?

Just wondering if anyone else ever jumped a tooth and motor still ran ok?

My other question is why didn't Toyota put a steel guide on the motor from the factory? Also, I know that some early Mercedes Benz 350/380 V8 motors had a single row chain and the hot set up to keep the motor from self destructing is to update them to a dual row chain, any such upgrade available for the 22re?

Thanks,

Kip

Can't help you on the first part but there is a dual-row chain setup available for the late 22r's and re's. LCE is the best option there.
