22RE build, engine assembly questions

Hey,

In the middle of rebuilding the 22RE. My big valve head, cams, pistons, and bearings will all be here tomorrow hopefully, and I need to get crankin on the assebmly. My question is, is what type of lube do you guys use when putting these motors together? Just engine oil, or is there a specific brand that sticks out? Also, I google'd this question, and I was also getting a lot of feedback that a motor needs pre-oiling before startup. Is this true? If so, what is this, and how is it done?

Add oil as normal and either
1. pull the coil wire and crank it over a few times or
2. crank it over by hand

I am going to pull the nut and check ball off the oil pump and hand crank it to make sure oil flows out of it showing oil in the pump then going with option 1

I'm using CRC engine assembley lube for my engine and it seems to work really well you can use it on bearings , cams ,ect I've used the permatex ultraslick stuff in the past and its good too. Post number 11

All the motors I have done I used just plain engine oil then cranked the motor with no spark for 30 seconds before I start. I also did a motor where I put grease in the main and rod bearings because it was not going in the truck for a while and I didn't want the oil to drain off.

I don't think you can go wrong with the (engine lube) but if you can't find it I have had good luck so far without it.

when I put mine together, we filled the oil pump with pure STP oil treatment just before we buttoned the motor up just to make sure that it primed right from the start, and just watched the oil pressure as we started it to make sure it was oiling. it had 50 psi as soon as it cranked. we lubed everthing as it went together, too.

A simple head gasket turned into a full motor rebuild, with a big vavle head, 6K springs, 261C cam, ready for turbo! Whenever it happens down the line!

Kinda funny how a lil HG job turns into a rebuild...
Good work, and for the Oil I used the Ultra Slick as well, same stuff that OldHarley has there.
