22RE AFM junkyard mod - more power

I did this to my other yota a few years ago but I didn't take any pictures. I just did this mod to my 94 yesterday.

The stock AFM is very restrictive. V6 models and various 80s-early 90s mazdas and toyotas have bigger AFMs. This means more power.

There are a few years of Celica/Supra in the 80s that are a pure bolt on mod. Very difficult to find. I know the 1982 year fits, which is a hard find anymore.

My 1990 4Runner has a 1989 Mazda MX-6 2.2L AFM + airbox.
My 1994 4Runner now has a 1988 Toyota Camry V6 AFM + airbox.

Here is how

Step one:
Go to junkyard. Don't even think about Pick N Pull. They suck balls. They want $53 for JUST an AFM without a box.
I paid $15 for one, $28 for the other, with air boxes at other junk yards.

When looking, look for late 80s-early 90s Mazda & Toyota cars. I think you could use a V6 4Runner one too. Look for the bigger AFM, you can tell just by comparing. Bring a tape measure if you are not sure. The big AFM's are taller.
Make sure you get the AFM with the smaller black cover.

This is what it looks like inside. It is more oblong and is much larger for more air

This is NOT what you want (square, big cover). It will not work.

The 22RE chip will not fit right inside this series. Notice the gap on the bottom left

This is the one. Notice the black cover has the U shape

Here is the Camry motor I got one from. 88 Camry V6

Now that you have your big AFM...

It is NOT plug n play. You need to swap the resistor chip deal from your 22RE to the new AFM. Take a screwdriver and pry the cover off.

unscrew and remove the plug as well as the dial with the brush on it.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING MORE>> mark the position of the wheel with the spring in it. I put a sharpie mark or etch it and the wall of the housing to know where to put it back to when I put it back together. This controls the mixture. VERY IMPORTANT.

chip

clean up the plug. bend those three prongs down just a bit to make sure you get good connection.

re assemble.

When re installing the dial... MAKE SURE that you lock it down for the full range of motion. It should go from full - to full +

AND DO NOT DAMAGE THE BRUSH

Full - ... notice it pushes this tab out away from the contact.. this controls the fuel pump

Full +

SO. Now RTV up the cover back on and mount it in the truck.

I used 3" black ABS.

One 3"-2" rubber adaptor.
One 3" coupler
few feet of 3" pipe.. cut to size
one 90deg elbow
one 45deg elbow
2 hose clamps

It's a tight fit but works well.

You might need to drill a hole for the airbox mount.

Enjoy a bit more power to churn those big meats.

You will need to block off your smog pump whatever it's called. Idle air intake garbage. I welded mine shut

Few weeks and I'll add a AC cowl snorkel.

The intake routing would go smoother if you do a battery location swap. I might do that in the future.

So now you have more air coming through the AFM, however you moved your choke point to the throttle body.

So your next move needs to be a bored out throttle body from LC engineering. Then you move your choke point to your intake. You need to port and polish your intake to get the extra air in. Then that means your choke point is moved your valves which can't allow that extra air in because there not oversized.

Putting a bigger AFM does not overcome the physics involved with the rest of your engine. Anytime you mess with the A/F ratio of an engine, the entire system needs to be looked at to gain the overall benefit of the change.

In a nut shell, it dosen't do much. Nice write up though...

Very Nice.
You did a great job for not much money. If you are happy with the results, then that is what matters.
If you are like me, you enjoy working on your truck. This has got to help some.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks racer. This definitely improved the power a bit. Im pretty happy with performance now.. big afm, headers, and full exhaust have made the truck a totally different ride. It feels faster than my father in laws bone stock truck with a new engine.. and I am on 35s.

The restriction point talk is nonsense

nice write up! i will pass along your info to a friend of mine with a 22re. I agree with you about the restriction point being nonsense. I put a bigger 7mge afm on my 3vze and and it helped a LOT!! and people do a lot of hating on the 3vze and this 1 simple mod woke my engine a ton. better throttle response overall more power and much nicer motor to have on and off-road. keep up the good work and keep tinkerin!!

Anyway the pics could be found or updated? Hard to tell whats going on without them...

Would an '89 Runner V6 AFm work on my '86 22RE?

I also hear that later 22re's ('94) had a larger throttle body than the earlier ones ('86), is that true?

No and no. Maybe whisper op and see if they can fix pics.

Do a head. cam. header before you dream of a dif vafm.

People us an 82 supra one if they change at all.

Have to have a reason for it to need more fuel.

pics have disapeared... hmm not sure where they went .

I put in a 261c cam, header, and full exhaust to realize this mod.

The V6 4runner AFM will not work.

1989 Mazda MX-6 2.2L AFM
1988-1989? Camry V6 AFM

the supra ones are very hard to find. Don't even bother. the pics are gone.. not sure what happened

i think that everyone in this thread is making assumptions about how the system was designed... i.e., replacing the afm because it's the assumed choke point... or assuming that the intake manifold is so perfectly designed that it couldn't possibly flow more air from a bigger afm.

since none of us have access to any of the toyota engineering data, the only way to know whether it's going to work or not is to get in there and try it.

the missing pics... where did they come from originally? let's try and re-link 'em, it's not a yotatech issue.

I used to own a Ford Probe so thankfully I already have the VAF unit. I'll be modifying it to fit my 22R-TE sometime soon.

The following are compatible vehicles to find at the junkyard:

88-92 Mazda 626 Sedan/5 door (turbo or nonturbo)
88-92 Mazda MX6 Coupe (turbo or nonturbo)
88-92 Ford Probe 4 cylinder only (turbo or nonturbo)
