so back in 85 my dad picked up a 2wd 5spd long bed 22re pickup
for some reason he called it a one ton
but
around august i totalled it


so around october something or other we picked up a 91 4x4 5spd 22re
honestly we dont know what this things been through
we've already had to replace the water pump, alternator, clutch master and slave cylinders, and now were thinking the whole clutch itself is out
so
my actual question is

does anyone see any problem with taking the tranny and motor (which only has 80k cause the original got hydrolocked) out of the 86 2wd and putting it in the 91 4x4.
my dads buddy in california would help me
and a friend of my dads who is a toyota parts salesman says it would be bolt up.
but my dads buddy here in texas who is a mechanic says it wouldnt work.

im trying to figure out what to do
any help would be great

there is no diffrence in a newer and older 22re to my knowledge, I have taken one out of a 93 and put it in an 87. The mecanic is probably thinking 22r and 22re, where there are diffrences.

i dont think he knows that much bout toyotas
but he can hold his own
and when i though about it
i didnt think there would be much issue...

Only issue I see is the fact that you're putting an older motor in a newer truck. You may want to check you state laws before doing it, especially if you have emissions tests. I've put older small block chevs in newer cars, but I got away with it because we don't have emissions test here in Fl, but if the D.O.T. were to have caught me, I would have been in a heap of trouble.

we used to live in cali with the 86
no problems with emisions
were in texas no
and well be moving back to cali where my dad has a friend who would swap em for idk how much money or so and a couple cases of beer

the motor in the 86 used to purrrrr
the one in the 91 putterss

but
i would depend on the 86 motor so much more

tranny wont work, its 2wd.... the 91 is 4wd. the motors are the same, but you may have to swap the intakes. 91 will have more emission stuff. but im pretty sure the 85 harness will plug into the 91 computer

anyone know what exactly the diff with the tranys is ??
i could (kinda) see why you would say it wouldnt work, but i like to know these types of things

True with the tranny, didnt think of that, 2wd and 4wd, I forgot bout the whole T Case thing

What I was referring to is the fact that you're talking about putting an older motor in a newer truck. I have no doubts about the older motor passing a smog test (hell, it may do better than the newer motor, lol), but in most states, if you're doing a motor swap, you must swap the original motor for a motor of the same year or newer. For instance, if you put the 91 motor in the 85 truck, no problem, because the 91 motor is obviously newer than the 85 motor.

I believe the block/head will be the same, but it will have a little bit different emissions system (mostly plugs). It doesn't matter what longblock is in it as long as you retain the stock or newer than stock emissions sytem. That law may differ but that's how it was explained to me here in Colorado. You shouldn't use that transmission (I suppose you could) because you can't bolt a tcase to it.

Well, now that I think about it, yes they are basically the same motor. You may just have to switch over some sensors and plugins and misc. things like the AFM, at the most I think the intake may be different. But yeah, you'll have to keep using the 91 tranny if the one in the 85 is 2wd... unless for some odd reason you wanter to make the 92 2wd... even if it was only temporary until you got a 4wd tranny.

i just dont know how bad this thing has been ran to hell
if its the original tranny or whatnot
and since the clutch just went out who knows whats going to break next
(knock on wood)
but as soon as we get back out there
i guess there will be a motor and a tranny for sale
ill keep you guys posted on the motor swap once that gets underway
