I want to change my 90 toyota pickup from a 22re to a 22r...i dont like all the computer stuff on it...can anyone tell what all i need to get started on it...i alredy have a 22r head but i dont think the motor is any good b/c it was left outside....anything well help thanks...

you will need a 22r intake/carb/egr, 22r distributor, and a 22r igniter, 22r fuel pump, 22r pickup tube in tank, heads are the same between 22r/22re after '85, the cams are different but the efi cam should work ok with the carb, i think thats all the major stuff

Why mess with a conversion? Sell your or trade your engine for a good running 22R. I'm sure there's someone wanting to go carb to EFI.

If it's licensed for the road and/or if you think that you'll ever sell it, you could have a problem.

I am also considering going with the more simple carb set up,and I think you also need a shorter throttle cable.has anyone done this?

X2. Check your local laws about installing older engines in newer vehicles.

It likely won't pass inspections.

yeah the carb cable IS shorter than the EFI cable. when i rebuilt my truck the new cab came off a 87 with a carburator, and came complete with a wiring harness and everything.... thought it would be a piece of cake... oh boy was i wrong... had to swap out the wiring harness, speedo cable, throttle cable, most stuff. oh, and also had to cut some of the cab in the transmission hole because for some reason the 87 tranny shifters were closer together than the 88... id stick with the 22RE... slightly better gas mileage, better for going uphills, and more power. though you can fix a carb up something mean, or so ive heard..

i had a 80 20r n a 86 but we dont have inspections unless its from outta state they just check the vin 2 make sure not stolen

EFI is a little better for traveling in the mountains, and on extreme angles, or on real bumpy roads. I can understand the benefits of a carb'd motor. I think maybe swap motors with someone for a nice 22R. Then you could get a Holley or Webber carb and get like 30 more horse power!!!

I have everything but the throttle cable,I just like the idea of no computer,and a fuel pump I can get at if I have to.I would leave all wiring in place incase to swap back,I would just have to deal with the 2 gas-tanks,and hoses,I think?

im working on a simular situation i want to take my intake off my 22r... and put the 22re motor in and put the intake with carb back on it... blew my timing chain this morning and have a 22re motor sitting in the garage. what do you guys think. sorry to highjack your thread.

intake ports are diff on EFI head, you would have to swap heads too but completely doable

I think you are crazy for wanting to do that... Carbs suck.. especially the wannabe fuel injected ones that are electronically controlled. They are all old crap by now. Out here in CA, an EFI goes for way more money and sells like hotcakes.. Carb toyota trucks just sit lonely since no one wants them..

And yes it is quite illegal to change your truck's fuel injection to a older carb setup.. even if it was available in that year as many years of the truck were available with either set up.


Your VIN states one thing and you have another is not going to fly well with the local inspectors or emission testers.. Heck, you can't even switch transmission setups..

No problem if the 22R is 85 or newer: there is no physical difference between the 22R and 22RE from 85-95. And if that is the case, you'll have to remove the shim from the end of the 22RE's camshaft and replace it with the fuel pump eccentric lobe from the 22R and remove the fuel pump block of plate and install the fuel pump from the 22R.

I did the opposite a while back: put an 88 22R into 91 22RE chassis and kept the fuel injection. Works great.

I am currently doing this...couldn't find a cable anywhere, so I took an angle grinder to the EFI throttle cable and made it shorter. works mechanically, but haven't got to the cranking part yet.
