22r vs 5vz which one would be better?

I've got a 95 4runner I'm looking to swap but the issue is I'm not sure what swap to do. I want to build the motor myself and the thing I've noticed is there are more top end parts for the 22r/re motor and a lot of bottom end builds for the 5vz-fe. Which motor would you suggest and why?

It all depends on just what your final goal is??

I have both these engines and I am to the point of going back to the 4 cylinder 22REC engines .

Yes it would be a very big drop in power but the emission systems and computers are so much more simpler.

these 3.4 engines are running me into the poor house with sensors going bad .

it seems like when my engines got above 150,000 the sensors just started to fail I guess the factory sensors just have a limited amount of life.

my older engines never gave me this much grief

i've had a 20r a 22re and now a 3.4 and imo the 5vz is superior, but i don't have an extended long term experience with the v6 -yet.
from what i have found from others the 3.4 is as reliable as a 22re which is saying alot.
the 22r is as good an engine as you will find anywhere, just a little underpowered.

if you go 4cyl go 3rz if you go v6 go 5vz nuff said..

@wyoming you must be overpaying for sensors lol.

Well what ever the cost I am going Toyota those monthly statements over a $1000.00 get old after awhile.

Don`t get me wrong I think I am just going through a learning curve and think I sorta multiply by 2 because of the 2 engines.

I am sure I will get them all done and sorted out in a short time.

I just think the maintenance is more intensive on the 3.4 then on the 2.4 from what I see with my own eyes.

Then maybe I just have bad luck with the emissions (gremlins ??) if it was not for the fact of needing the MIL working and off to get the sticker it would not be a issue

Short answer : Between the three motors you mentioned in the original post, the 5vz-fe, of course. The 3.4 will obviously out perform the 2.4.

Long answer : You can't beat the simplicity of the 22r/e but since you're asking about doing a swap, I'm going to assume that isn't an issue for you. Then there's reliability, I have never owned any of toyota's V6s so I cant personally say. donomite49 seems to think they're just as reliable. I've heard of much the same but I've also heard the some of the opposite. Then you have power, efficiency, etc. There are many things to consider not just between the 2.4 and the 3.4 but also the 22r vs 22re, the 3rz vs 5vz, etc. As wyoming says, "It depends what your end goal is."

3.4 is a much more powerful motor.. 190 hp plus you can supercharge it and get to 265. If all your doing is crawling the 22re would be fine but I see no point to use a slower motor if your already doing a motor swap.

Ya every once in a while you may have to replace a sensor but people complaining about a sensor after 150k? Really not a big deal. Very sturdy motor, pulls my t100 through all sorts of hell and back.. had a load to mexico and back 2k above max gvwr

Which has more torque? I'm looking for a power full motor all the way around. Torque, horsepower. Its something I want to completely build. Pistons, the works but all I can find is parts for the 22r/we its kinda annoying.

5vz

The only question I have on this topic is: Will the 5VZ mount up to the existing 5 speed in a 1991 4Runner that my 3.0 is currently attached too???

22re 142ftlb 3.4 has 220ftlb. the TURBO 22re still only has 173.

3.4 blows it away stock.

You wont really need to build the 3.4 but if you want to you may have to have a shop do custom stuff... i dont think there is much off the shelf parts for that motor (besides the supercharger 265hp 270ftlb torque)

What are you looking to spend?

Its something I'm going to build one part at a time before I drop the motor in. I found aluminum pistons, forged rods, and a forged crank but I can't find any of the top end of the motor. No heads, comp cam, lifters... nothing. I'm not too worried about cost.
