22r.. It turns and turns and turns and turns

So I started my truck and the it wouldnt idol, just died right away cold (but at least it would run I just had to keep my foot on the gas). SO I decided hey maybe my air filter on my carb is dirty, so I take it off and try starting without it well it not just turns and turns and turns. Put the air filter back on and it just turns and turns and turns. It smells like gas. WHAT THE HELL?? Taking my air filter off and putting it back on shouldnt stop it from starting back up. Any thoughts?

P.S. I am ready to say screw toyota and run over this peace of crap with a chevy

Do you have spark? Is the spark blue? If you smell raw fuel, it might be flooded. The 22R Toyotas I've had over the years have been dead on reliable with basic maintenance. You could always do what my truck's previous owner did. When I was told about the truck, I was excited to be getting a truck I had wanted since 1995. Even if it had the 4 cyl I didn't care, they're good engines. This one just happened to be swapped to something a little bit more hillbilly friendly.

check for gas in the tank, then, fuel flow to the carb, then spark. Check carb float. Make sure distributor rotates and that the rotor points points to #1 wire when at tdc of #1 compression stroke.

it has gas, judging by the fact that it reeks of gas when I try to start it, the fuel flow is good. How am I supposed to check for spark when the truck wont start.. let alone idle... Only way I know how to test for spark is when the truck is idleing disconnect each plug one at a time and if unplugging one doesnt effect how its running I got a bad plug..

its not a stock carb either, its a weber empi POS

This stupid truck makes me want to cry. I replaced the starter, the battery, the clutch, the alternator, the fuel pump, all for it to turn and turn and turn YAY. I am ready to put a sock in the tank and light eer up

Pull the boot back on the plug end of a spark plug wire and hold that in your mouth, get a firm grip on the fender and have somebody crank the engine over. if you light up like a jack o lantern, you have spark, if not, pull the cap and make certain the rotor turns. Now that I rethought what I initially posted, insert a spark plug in the end of the plug wire and ground it to the block, have an assistant turn the engine over and watch for a spark, blue is good, yellow is weak. If the rotor turns, the check for voltage to the coil.

Your float could be stuck in the open position letting excess fuel run in and flood the engine. Is your choke opening? Maybe it is warm enough it should open and is causing the flooding.

If it's getting gas to the carb, then it might be that the float is sticking and it is, basically, flooded.

You can check that you're getting spark with a timing light. Or, pull a spark plug wire and pull back the boot and hold the wire so that the metal socket is very close, but not touching, something metal. Crank the engine and watch for spark. Don't fry yourself and if you've got gasoline all over the place, don't set it on fire.

Also, if you have a can of starting fluid (ether) and spray it into the carb while cranking, if you have spark, the engine will almost always fire. Unless, of course, the spark is way off time or you have no compression.

Oh, I missed a couple. Cyclopsblown34, I'm leaning towards the carb as being the problem. Particularly as he says he's got a strong gasoline aroma. I don't know muach about those weber carbs, but people report good success with them. Any carb can have a sticky float/needle or malfunctioning choke, though. I've even seen it happen to Chevrolets.

Perhaps somebody should develop a swap to put a Chevrolet 235 in these things. Of course, that's essentially what's in the old Land Cruisers.

Okay I am about to test the spark plugs. where is the float.. I know inside of the carb but where exactly?

I am new to this.... never done my own tune up BUT, replaced my clutch when I had to replace my rear main seal.. This carb is gettin to me... its a Weber EMPI 32/36 DGEV.. How do I adjust the float? I cant find a good picture and I dont know what I am trying to adjust. I am going to test my spark plugs here in a little bit, also getting carb cleaner
