I am repaceing the head on my dads 86 4x4 and figured I would post the buildup to get opinions about the plan before I go get all of the parts one question i had is I wonder if i am forgetting any parts. that i should be replaceing while i have the engine torn down

I would go with the Engnbldr gasket set. I bought mine from the dealer and it cost a ton of coin. If you're really set on the Toyota head gasket, just get that from the dealer and still get the Engnbldr gasket set. The OEM Toyota gasket is only about $30, so you'd still be well under how much money the dealer wants. Local dealership here wanted $25 for the semicircular plugs that go on the head. I bought some aftermarket ones for $5. I ended spending close to $300 Cdn for my gaskets because I had to keep going back to the dealership for misc ones. I'll never do that again. The engnbldr set is only $60 and will have every gasket you could possibly need.
So a compression test and leak down test BEFORE you start tearing the engine apart. I only did a compression test and really wished I had also done a leak down test before I took the head off.
Check your timing chain and guides while you're there with everything off. Also, maybe replace your timing cover ($30-40 from engnbldr IRRC). A tiny pinhole can cause a leak.
Not sure where the fuel filter is on your 22R but it's buried on the 22RE, so you might want to replace that while you've got everything apart.
Maybe new water pump and oil pump?
Other than that, take the opportunity to flush out your cooling system.

Also, it's way easier to do with the engine out of the truck and on a stand.

Any particular reason you're going with stealership gaskets? Their good gaskets, but you can get gasket kit's from Ted aswell, and they are very very complete, good quality and cost a hell of a lot less.

And I know there is a big debate about whether you need to or not, but new headbolts are never a bad idea.

If you've got the intake manifold off anyways, this would be a good time to do the fuel filter. It's super easy to get at with everything out of the way as it will be.

Make sure you've got oil, a filter and about a gallon of coolant. No matter how long you drain the cooling system, so always spills out when you yank the rad.

didnt see the gasket set on enginbldr, went lookin and found it thats about 1/2 what i can get them at the dealer for so, scrub the toyota gaskets I will do the fuel filter overlooked that one. I allways replace the head bolts because i am paranoid and hate doing things twice.

How many miles do you have on your timing chain? Also, may want to consider dropping the oil pan as you'll probably end up dropping some stuff into it.
