22R-E question

Long time no post! How's everyone been?

Anyways, Down to business.

I found a 91 standard cab, in decent shape and very little cancer. Its solid. everything works, except the engine.

Actually, even it works, but the number 3 cylinder is flooded with gas. I'm not too familiar with the 22R-E and its common failure points. What would have caused this? Is it salvageable? The truck is only $750 bucks, so I think I will buy it anyways, but if I can avoid an engine swap, it'd be ideal.

Thanks!

Clint

you got a fuel injector problem, from the sounds of it. i wouldnt drive it anymore than you absolutely have to. theres a chance of the injectors catching fire. lets see what other people say, but thats what it sounds like.

Here's the truck:

Extra Clean Frame!

The Worst of the Rust:

And the engine...

Okay, I got the story now...

It appears that the owner's son was out mudbogging at a local mud hole, and white steam came from under the hood. When he took it home and they checked it out, the number three cylinder was filled with gas. The owner tore down the block that far, and he theorizes that gas seeped from the number two to the number three via a blown head gasket. Sound logical?

The motor uses about a quart of oil every two weeks, so since its already stripped this far down, I will probably buy a rebuild kit from engbldr.com. I was told to just have the head gone over and check to make sure its not warped, put on the gasket kit for the whole engine, and it should be golden.

I am planning on doing the timing, machining the carbon off the head, maybe have the injectors gone over, new pistons, etc. Should be like new...

Do you guys and girls think it's worth $750?
And, do you concur with the owner's theory?

$750 for the truck?? That isnt a bad deal. You know if you are going to rebuild it, who cares bout the history But do have an injector looked at while you rebuild it all. Seeing how the top was exposed to have that mush rust on the engine block, it would be good to do the entire motor. So after it ias all said and one you have a $2000 vehicle that looks good

A stuck injector is about the only source of gas that I could come up with. It would be an unusual problem.

The #4 piston on that thing looks clean. I'd suspect that it's the likely HG cylinder - a photo of the HG might be able to confirm, but a clean piston usually indicates a water leak.

I'd hone that thing up and hit it with wd-40 pretty quickly... You don't want it to get too rusty.

hey thanks all for the replies. I'm not gonna buy it after all. I'd rather spend the money finishing the projects I already have started on my truck.

But again, thanks!

Hey man, I was just yankin' yer chain. Hope you didn't take offense. And there's no reason to feel guilty. So you changed your mind. Big deal. You'll probably change it again some point in the future.
