22r / 22re build up... possible hybrid?
Hey everyone, its been a while since i have been on here. I managed to find myself a pair of 22r's for sale locally for $100, and jumped on the opportunity to grab them. One is complete with carb, intake and exhaust manifolds, distributor and even part of the harness, the other is basically a long block with some possible head damage. What I need to know is between the 22r and 22re, which major engine components are compatable? I am mostly concerned with the head. (I have a 22re in my truck and I know that there are some differences between it and the two heads i just bought) Are the heads compatable? The reason i am going this route is because I cannot afford to have the engine in my truck down for an extended period of time and would love to be able to build slowly and then swap quickly in a weekend when the engine was finished.
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am considering a making a 22retc clone/redheaded step child motor, so anyone who has a source on what is needed to do the conversion, that would be appreciated as well thanks...
I'll try to get some tear down pictures up as soon as I start tearing into the blocks...everyone likes pictures.

the heads are basically the same, depending on years.
i have used a 84 CARB head on my 86 EFI block
i have used a 85 CARB head on my 86 EFI block.
i have used 85 EFI head on my 86 EFI Block
the turbo conversion will prolly take you a while unless you source all the parts (quite a few and somewhat hard to find/expensive) before you do a tear down.

All 85 to 95 22r and 22re were the same, block and head. The turbos were different, less compression and different pistons for one. The 81 to 84 22r were also a little different. I believe the intake bolt pattern was slightly different for one thing. I don't think It's as easy as bolting up a turbo to the 22r/re. Some internal stuff is different. You should try though, I would love to do this same thing one day. Turbos are cool! Good luck.

I remember someone on here saying something about compression ratios being different between 22r's and 22re's. Which ended up with different specs from different sites. And I am not talking just 81-82 82-83 84-85 86-95 differences either.
And an 84 head on an 86 block will result in hello low compression.

Yeah I suppose I need to run the engine serial numbers to find out a little more about them before I start making plans. If anyone knows where i might be able to find a good comprehensive engine parts manual that contains 22r, 22re, and 22retc parts.
When it comes to the turbo issue, I was thinking about making it more of an aftermarket setup, rather than a true 22retc, because the parts are probably more readily available. I would say like a squires turbo systems type thing.

Got some pictures for everyone to look at if interested. It looks like they are both pre-85 blocks, and unfortunately i can see my dreams of this projects slipping away...

you'd have to find a pre 85 22re intake manifold at the very least, not sure if all of the injectors for a post 85 will work in it though, as well as weather or not the programming of the post 85 ecu will be kind to those engines or not. Then there might be an issue with the exhaust manifold bolting up, but I think they will even though the port shapes are different. Might have to delete the air injection stuff though if they do.
I know all of the differences, but not sure on some things that will and wont work as far as crossing them.

Well thats a big giant kick in the nads. The only thing i found that might be any good is the fact that the post 85 22rte's had the larger 82cc combustion chamber. So everything else aside, why wont the 22re intake bolt up to the early head? All the heads that they sell online now are retro-compatable. I have a good exhaust manifold i can use on it since the bolt pattern is different.

Excellent... Well with the bigger combustion chambers (82 in old head vs. 58 in new) I wonder what kind of differences you would see in hp/torque/fuel efficiency?

Started tearing into the motor this weekend, and everything looked great until found some tan pudding in the water pump housing. Is this an indication of oil? I found no trace of water in the oil though so it was only a one way leak. I'll get some picures of my progress up later today.
