22mpg last tank 12mpg this one

I did some road tripping in the old yote a few weeks back and averaged 22mpg, mostly highway -our highways are not flat so i am definitely happy with 22mpgs (out of a 15y/o truck with 32's in need of a tune-up.)

Since then I've been just driving around town. Took a couple trips to a ski area which is about a 2500 elev gain. There was some good snow last week and before so some of my miles have been 4wd and probably 1/3 have been with the hubs locked. A lot of short trips too on a cold engine.---That said, I calc'd my mileage with the 32"tire correction factor (total miles x 1.12 according to my gps readings) and got only 12MPG... I mean thats terrible!

I have no codes, I do have a pre-muffler exhaust leak which sounds like its getting worse, and the engine ticks / knocks between 1800 and 2250 rmps which people have told me is timing. I really dont beat on the truck, I drive really slow. Could the combination between harder driving and some needed maintenance really result in 10mpg difference between 1 tank of gas and the next?!?!

My 293K miles 22re's very picky with gas mileage per say depending on how much I lay into the throttle...

I can go almost 2 weeks on a tank if I try to stretch it out, but I often catch myself driving like a pissed-off teenager, and that leads to about an average of 17mpg

I too have a horrible pre-O2 sencor exhaust leak, which is about to get fixed with the help of a Thorley header, so hopefully that'll help a little...

I find the same thing. All in how you drive. More so with these engines. I think it is because they are not sequential injected. Fuel control sucks.

haha 12 mpg I wish I was getting that.... Try some 35's with 4.56's...
I might get 10 mpg on a good day. However city driving eats gas period.
Being in 4wd always eats more gas.
Plus having your hubs locked creates drag without even being in 4wd.
I wish I had 32's right now for gas mileage but oh well.

wow are you sure your 10mpg is due just to your gears and tires?

I feel like 4.56's mated with 35's should produce near-stock (slightly bellow) final drive ratio. Wouldn't just the wind drag from the higher ride reduce your economy? It seems like a really aggressive combo (ie 4.88s and 31"s or something) would produce a lot more torque at the wheels and could really have the ability consume fuel.

I am seriously considering putting in 4.56's with my 32"s but if its going to cut my economy in half forget about it.

Well my engine is a POS right now. I am putting another one in it with around the same mileage and it has a new clutch hopefully I'll get better fuel economy with this one.

There's a guy in westford selling a running 94 V6 Toyota EXT CAB AUTOMATIC IT HAS 4.88 GEARS IN IT HE WANTS $800 for the whole thing.
It's on craigslist.
It was rolled the guy bought it for the bed and the front fenders. If you are looking for gears who knows he may part it out.

What's your door jam say for your axle code?

G292?

Check here for what yours is: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/vin/
