22 wont fire pics inside!

I recently did a 87 22r to a 83 22r swap. The engine cranks fine and is getting gas but wont start. The plug that goes to the distributor that comes out of the coil shows no voltage. Shown in the first picture. I took 2 wires and ran them from the plugs that had voltage to the plug on the distributor but still no fire. Any ideas? I dont know what else to try? I kept the plug that fits on the 87 alternator and spliced it to make it work with the 83 alternator. I just cant get no darn fire from it. Is there something I am missing or I am over looking that is a commmen problem? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

may I suggest using the 87 distributor on the 83 engine?

don't know where you live, but things like that are required for smog testing.

I live in Oklahoma, they have no smog test. I didnt know if using the 87 distributor would make a difference or not. Do you think that is the problem or is that just an enviromental issue?

Is there a big difference in the 87 distributor and the 83 distributor? I dont see how changing it will make a difference, the plug coming from the coil has no juice, but there is juice going into the coil.

Use the 87 distributor and alternator, it will make things easier. if you not getting power from the ignition check the easy stuff first, like fuses and wiring, and if thats not it then check the coil and ignitor.

i tried using the 87 alternator but it wont fit on the engine, there is a slight difference in the shape of them and the radiator hose is in the way for the 87. Somehow I touched the ground wire from that harness that goes to the alternator and it sparked and blew a fuse. I have a jumper wire on there right now. Earlier today I tried to start the truck and it fired up for like 2 seconds and thats it, then it didnt act like it was firing at all.

isn't there a fuel cut solenoid on the carburetor? if so, that may be causing part of your no start problem.

the solenoid is supposed to cut off fuel when you turn the key off.
If you're smelling fuel that is obviously not the problem.
You're flooding out.
pull the plugs and let it sit a bit (hour or so) to dry the plugs and cylinders.
afterwords, when you try to start it, do not press the gas pedal at all.

I would look here and see what your wires do:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114...iagram-146722/

Then find a wiring diagram for your 87 and splice the right wire in. That would be the best way of doing it.

the coil seems to be wired correctly, I tested the + coming into the coil and it is hot. So is the wire coming out of the coil to the distributor, how can I test the plug wire from the coil to the distributor? The 83 dist. and the 87 dist look identical.

You can try putting a spark plug on the end of one of your leads and ground the tip and you should see it fire when your crank it.

I would check everything before the spark plug for problems.

I whipped out my 83 fsm. Make sure you wired it up like this:

Well I rechecked everything and it all looks right to me, the truck has been sitting for 2 days. I tried to start it up and it fired but the battery acted like it wasnt very strong so I put it on the charger and tried it again and it fired up but the battery couldnt crank it all the way to start. I dont get it. So I tried jump starting it and not it wont fire again.

ok my truck set for like a week. I replaced the battery and rechecked all grounds. I tried to start the truck and it started right up, but only ran about 6 or 8 seconds. Then I tried to start it back up and it just turns over and wont start. I tried to spray some starter fluid in the carb but nothing, any ideas now? That kinda tells me I got my wiring issue resolved I think.

Does the breather assembly have to be on the truck while you try to start it to make it run properly? I have had it off this whole time if that makes any difference.

Well I tried it again and this time the truck started up and ran first try, but died after about 15 seconds, it was also cutting out a bit. I am thinking more of a fuel problem now.
