2.4 turbo on hilux 2.8
Hi guys, i tried searching but didnt find much on turbo's on the 2.8deisel engine
Okay a bit of background, my truck is a hilux 2.8diesel non turbo, this is an aussi truck and has at best 50-60bhp, as a result it labours up hills and takes about 2 minutes to get to 100kmh!
My plan is to buy a turbo kit peice by peice to save some money, but i cant seem to find a turbo for the 2.8, only ones for the 2.4 engine.
Now i know that this will fit onto a 2.8 turbo manifold as the 2.4 and 2.8 share the same one but...
Will the 2.4 turbo have enough boost for the 2.8engine ??
Will it be as good as the complete kit, or a larger turbo ?

Maybe we can help each other out! I need to know if the non-US diesels have hood scoops in this generation. Want to do a top mount intercooler (TMIC), and am wondering about the hood side of things (make my own or source one from overseas).
Any 2nd gens over there come with hood scoops/ducting for a TMIC from the factory?

That sounds like a good plan, im not planning on doing an intercooler straight away, im going to see how it preforms ( overheating etc..) then add 1 if neccessary
Well out here in aussi we only have the 2.4 turbo, and none of them that ive seen have hood scoops.
But i have seen them when people convert to v8, and then they just cut one out of a ford falcon or similar then weld it on and respray so you could try that if you can paint and weld

I swapped in a 1KZ-TE into my north america spec truck and it's nice! but to answer your question, I think the 2.4L turbo will be fine except that the CT-20 (that's the turbo) is considered junk and not likely to last more than 100Kkm before rebuild. The other thing you will run into is setting up a boost compensator on your injection pump. You will get some benifit just by turboing the motor but if the injection pump isn't adding more fuel for the level of boost your building it won't be much at all. I'm pretty sure you have to get a whole different injection pump (one off of a 2L-T maybe?) to make it work. I think I would get a different turbo than the 2.4l one just cause it's not known to be a very good one.

Thanks for your input , the stock injector pump on my truck is adjustable to allow for more or less fuel to be added, its the same as off the turbo 2.4 so it can be easily turned up to add the extra fuel needed
And hmm thats interesting , what turbo would you suggest ? i dont really feel like spending all the money to then have it fail, i always herd the ct20's were pretty reliable but im not sure yet.

your injection pump is not the same. You can turn your fuel up and down but it will be greater or less over the entire rpm range and not boost dependent. To run a turbo properly you need to have a boost compensated IP that can tell when your boosting 10psi vs 2psi and give you fuel accordingly. The 1KZ uses a CT-12b which is found on supras also and seems to be a much better turbo. I'd say if you can find one use it, or pick up a Garret of some sort (I don't really know that much about turbos).

The 2.4L turbo will be fine on the 2.8L, the CT-20 also came in AW20 MR2's and is no more or less reliable than a CT-12 or CT-26 there all the same family turbos. The quality of the turbo comes down to the way its been treated over its life. I would put a 2.4L turbo on as there plentiful from the sounds of it and easy to replace if there is a problem.

Okay so today i just orders a 2,4 turbo manifold for my truck cost me $110 not bad, and by the end of next week i should have enough money for the actual turbo so my question is what else do i need to order ?
1. manifold
2. turbo
3. wastegate?
4. hoeses for air ducting
5...... what else cooling ?
And also i cannot find a wastegate anywhere !! the turbo does not come with one attached and i cant find any on the net :/ and im pretty sure the wreckers wont have many, now what? the wastegate is what connects the turbo outlet to the exhaust ??

Big thing is when you look at one in the scrap yard check it for shaft play, side to side but more importantly in and out.
Looking forward to seeing how it all works out, the 2.4L turbo set up on a 3L up here is fairly common.

once again, I'm no turbo expert....but I have never heard anyone say, especially those with CT-20's, that they are just as reliable as a CT-12b and they are all basically the same. Yes, toyota did put them on a bunch of vehicles, but from what I've read on the internet, I don't think the newer MR2 CT-20 is the same thing that came on the 2.4l diesel trucks or the 22RTE. But you can check all this out yourself on other forums.

Does anybody know where to get a waste gate that attaches the ct20 turbo to the standard exhaust of the hilux 2.8 ln107 ??

It is an internal wastegate. The actuator attaches to the borrom of the impellorhousing.
I swapped a 3L engine, 2Lt turbo and intercooler in my friends hilux doublecab.
You do need to turn in the fuel screw on the stock pump and use a larger diameter exhaust.
If you can find or buy the water hose piping (bolted to the cilinderhead) of a turbo you can easily connect the watercooling for the turbo.
It has 2 extra pipes for this, close to the turbo, otherwise it's a bolt on.
