1UZ-FE or not to 1UZ-FE, that is the question.

I want to ask you all for you alls advise on something, my 22RE is running great, but It burns a lot of oil, and last oil change I found metal in the pan. Im not going to do anything untill the engine completely dies, but I want to ask you all and see what yall think.

I want a little more power out of my truck, but I dont know if its going to be worth all of the extra work to drop a 1UZFE in it. I mean I love the 22RE but sometimes its a little underpowered. Also I know that my transmission wont hold up to the extra power of the V8.

Now I dont want people to tell me to just drop a 350 in it cause I want to keep the truck all toyota. I also want to keep the transmission a stick.

I know I would have to do a body lift to fit the engine under the hood too and I hate body lifts. But a cowl induction hood is out of the question.

Or do you think I should just rebuild the 22RE and add some performance mods to it?

Which toyota standard transmission would hold up to the power?

There are a few build up threads on here about it. Also check out http://lextreme.com/forums/index.php?
http://www.uzswap.com/forum/index.php?www
for more information about this swap, a few from this board run these/frequent them and I got these links off another thread here and have been researching the swap myself. My issue is with the transmission/t-cases, my tranny is Auto, but it is has some metal as well and I haven't flushed it yet, I just baby it and change the fluid/filter/etc. I'm waiting to see what goes 1st my 3.0 or the tranny. There is about 130k miles on it.

Yeah mines t 146k on it, my trans was just rebuilt too, thats another factor in this swap.

I like the 22re I just want to know if its worth the work and the little bit more power for all the work required!

i'd rebuild the 22re or bolt in a new one. sell the old kinda thing. thats me though.open the exhaust, better air filter, cam, good spark plugs, wires/cap/rotor, and you'll have a motor last you another 200k miles.

I started a thread not too different than this one, it turns out that the 1UZ-FE 4.0 V6 is a very tall motor, so you may have to install a large amount of body lift, and/or custom fab a hood that will fit your needs. Also, the 1UZ is pretty expensive.

1) Don't listen to the rednecks- keep it all Yota!
2) Ill also be looking at this swap when the ol' 3.0 gives up the ghost. I will be buying a wrecked SC400, I'd like to do the vvti version. I'm willing to put in the extra work, but I have a lot more resources than most ppl. For the tranny I'm planning on running either the Lexus auto with a Yota gear driven case adapted behind it; if this isn't possible plan B would be a 4wd Tundra tranny. These trannies will hold up, have the correct stall & ratios for this motor, and will be the least amount of wiring headache. I'm an auto guy so this works for me, if you have to have a manual you may be in for a lot of headache. I know that custom bellhousings and flywheels are availble from Australia, and they're expensive. I think they say that the (R150???) turbo trans will hold up, is that the one in the turbo supras ? I think over at Lextreme they have said that there are still computer issues to be worked out for the manual also. IMO just swapping in a rebuilt 22RE is your easiest route, but ultimately the decision is yours whether you want to tackle a big swap.

If the v8 is too tall why not consider a 3.4L v6 from a tacoma or 4runner

A 1UZ in a Reg. Cab truck would be nuts. Didn't a mod on this site put one in his 2nd gen. runner?

Yeah, Cebby. And last I saw he still hadn't been able to finsh it, lots of custom fabrication with fitting that engine in our trucks. It isn't nearly as simple as dropping in a 5VZ.

I'll look for his thread.

Edit: Here it is,

The write up on Twisty's 2nd gen with 1uz is really great. here's the link:
http://www.uzswap.com/forum/index.php?topic=37.15

I have a 90 LS400 with 1UZ and i will highly endorse this motor. I bought it with 165k and 5 years later it now has 240k miles and is the best motor i've ever dealt with in any of my dozen vehicles (short of my yamaha 1100).

good luck if you choose to go this route.

rember the $$ in doing a swap compared to rebuilding the 22re, i rebuilt mine with lc headers and a cam from engnbldr for about $900 doing most all the labor myself, except for the machine work. but if you can afford it go for the1uz-fe or possible the 3.4 because the power will be awesome compared to the 22re

I already have and exhaust and everything.

I just want my truck to have that BIG truck sound, you know out of the exhaust.

I was thinking about the 5vze too, but I would have to get a new tranmission and everything anyway so why not just do it big!!

Anyone think the r150f would last behind a 1uz?

I have some time to think about it, I am just looking ahead!
