1st gen rear brake shoe part

I need to do a rear brake job on my 1986 4Runner. I was looking up OEM part numbers and found that early 86 4runners have a different part number for the rear shoes. This part is discontinued. My local dealership has not been helpful.

Is there a difference back there or is it just a formulation thing? I'm guessing there won't be a problem. I'll likely go aftermarket as $100 seems pretty high.

Red face

If I remember there are two different length and width shoes which are not interchangeable

Without lots of work .

As of Late I have been using Napa Ultra Premium brake products

The difference is between 86 and 87 so you need to go by production date.

The 86 uses 11.5"x2" shoes UP UP568 Napa Part #

The 87 uses 11.61"x 1.97 " UP UP589 Napa Part #

I hope that helps you out.

Some dealer parts people need to be trained then the Toyota parts catalog can be frustrating looking up older parts they neverdid before.

When I change rear brakes for the first time every thing new goes on.

Thanks!

I went to Napa today. Sadly they need to be ordered and won't be here soon enough to pull this off this weekend.

I had forgotten what a PITA drum brakes are to adjust. I got them to the point I couldn't turn the drums by hand. Throw the tires on only to find it won't hold on an incline. DOH!

i must be close. I was running out of daylight so will finish today. I see a disc conversion in my future.

All done. Brakes are still a little mushy and I hope bleeding them will solve that.
