1st Gen Cup holder Idea...
So, I have been in the process of trying to get a 3rd gen Center Console into my 1st gen for the past couple months.
I have the console in, but the part that goes around the shifter doesn't want to fit.
SO. I am thinking, what if before I put it on, I made some sort of cup holder deal that would hold the cups on either side of the shifter area, down by the floor.
Any opinions?
Thanks,
Alex

I am going to try and get them to sit pretty close to the floor... It may make it so I cannot slide the seat up much, but my wife is 5' 9" and I am 6'... so I should really NEED to move it up.
We'll have to see.

ok here's my "pen holder becomes cup holder" mod. this was the only place i could place it without interfering with both shift patterns and the pass. seat. the seat will slide forward no problem, and it's remarkably solid using just the front right screw for the shift boot plate. this pen holder stuff is available at office depot type places for like $3. they make 'em in silver too if you wanted to match a grey interior. i just used some i had extra.
i also put in this little pen holder in front of the rear window switches and finished it off nicely. one tiny screw in the center keeps it in place. it holds the remote nicely. (the white thing is a napkin stuffed in there)

keepin' mouth wash in the truck was a habit i started when i had a bad tooth and was supposed to keep it clean until they could fix it. then i got to like having it around for instant minty-ness. surprise kisses, surprise cop at my window, surprise you're going home in last nite's clothes and didn't pack a toothbrush...all kinds of handiness.
good eye on catchin' that tho! haha

Before I say anything, I know nothing About the 4runners, so on that note... Is your 4runner a 1980s model? If so, since the rear windows are powered, are the front windows powered too, and are the locks powered too? If so are all 4runners powered?one final question, are the doors the same as an 87 extended cab doors?
Thank you in adavnce, and the pencil holder was a good idea!

Its pretty easy to put something in for a pop can or bottle but i can't seem to figure anything out for a good coffee mug holder without it getting in my way or it still dumping allover.

yeah, like EvilEye said, all doors 84-88 are the same 4runner or pickup, plus 89 4Runners too. (the 89 pickup was a different, newer version)
the only difference in doors was whether or not it had vent wing windows and power window regulators. trucks with power windows/locks either had switches on the door panel, or had SR5 door panels with much larger armrests, and a switch pod in it. So, two different power window switch configs are out there. You can retrofit powered parts in if you want.
i've always thought that vent wings only came with non-power windows, but the original brochures i've read on toyotareference.com seem to indicate otherwise. that said, i've NEVER seen one.
(so if anyone has vent wing windows AND power windows, i'd love to see a picture)
all 84-89 and then 90-92 4Runners had a slide down power rear window and fold down tailgate. i think it was 92-93 they switched to a liftgate with fixed window. that's about when 4Runners had a sex change from "truck" to "tall station wagon", cuz more soccer moms needed a lift gate to hide under while loading groceries.
there's some fairly thorough information on the history of the models on wikipedia.com . be sure to look up "4Runner" as well as "Hilux" for some good reference information and some cool pictures of non-US models.
man, i just noticed something weird. in that picture i took of my cup holder, someone is sitting in my driver's seat. it looks like me, i have pants like that. i wonder who it is????????? maybe someone else took the picture, but i couldn't imagine who. straaaange.
also funny i just realized i don't even have that interior anymore. i traded my grey DX interior for a tan SR5 interior.

are you sure you can't squeeze it in there? maybe you can fabricate a little metal plate that extends from the attachment point i used, but a little further forward. it might get in the way of a passenger's left shin bone, but it should clear the seat sliding forward. they have slotted plate at home depot/lowe's that could work for something like that.
you could also use those same black (also in grey) pencil holders and mount them directly to the door panel somewhere above the window crank. you wouldn't even have to screw into the door frame if you put a metal plate behind the door panel for reinforcement, and used two screws through the pencil holder so it won't swivel around.
i was going to use a few more of those pencil holders, and strap them to the roll bar in the back for rear seat cup holders, similar to how people strap fire extinguishers back there. they're pretty durable, easy to color match, and cheap.
