1st Gen 4runner Roll Bar Question

Hey I am looking at buy this 1987 4runner with a lift. I was wondering how well the roll bar works since i will have friends back there in case the car does roll. I just want to know if it is strong enough not to bend or break in a roll over because it looks pretty weak? or if i should get my hands dirty and build a modest cage back there.?

Pretty weak. 4x4 innovations has a nice cage for a decent price that goes front to rear.

yeah that cage looks pretty nice, but im kind of looking now for something that is only in the rear and you could say reinforces the existing one.

Without a hoop behind the driver, and forward of your passengers, as well as tied into the existing runner bar. It will not be strong enough.

I think the stock roll bar is just for decoration. Peel back the carpet and look at how it's mounted. You will find that it's just another thickness of sheet metal spot welded to the body- in a roll I wouldn't think it would do much of anything.

For a looker, You would be amazed at what they can take. I have rolled my runner and the thing didn't flinch.

Belive it or not...it will take quite a shot without crumpling like tin foil. Not sayin Id gameble my famlies life on it in a high speed roll over...but its still alot stronger than it looks.

k well all this is good to know. I think i might put a hoop starting behind the front seat where the cab ends, then run it back to existing roll bar, seems like it would be pretty simple. Correct me if im wrong. but does anyone have any pictures of a set up like this?

This is what I did, but now its all getting tied into my EXo. I don't have time to post pics, but there might be some in my sig. I'll check for pics tonight when I get home from work, I hope I remember.
