1st Gen 4Runner: Power Steering Reservoir to Pump Hose Obsolete???
When I bought my 86 4runner (22RE) back in December it had a leaky hose from the ps reservoir to the pump. It was Sunday afternoon (dealer was closed) and the local parts store told me bulk hose would work.
After taking a razor blade to the original 26 year old crusty hose to remove it, I learned that the bend in the OEM hose was just enough to create a kink in the bulk hose. Given that it was a Sunday and I needed to finish up, I got longer bulk hose and made big loop (resembling the number 9) to avoid the kink.
For most part it works, but I notice that if I try to immediately drive after start up, the pump makes an awful squawk. If I give it a minute for the fluid to circulate, I'm fine.
I finally got around to calling the dealer for the hose and they told me it is obsolete. All local parts stores only seem to have bulk hose for this application.
Has anyone else run into this? Curious what you did to solve it.

pretty sure you didnt "blead" the system correctly after you installed the jobber hose , or you put power steering fluid in it ?
lift up the front end (off the ground) . turn the wheel lock to lock , with the truck running .. then top off the resivoir with ATF .. NOT powersteering fluid

I definitely bled the system back in December and used ATF. I did also top it off a few times and re-bled it to compensate for the longer hose. I think the challenge is that the '9' shape of the hose introduces a slight upward slant away from the pump before slanting back down. That's why i think it takes a few seconds for the pump to get the fluid it needs.
...which brings me back to my original question... has anyone hit this before? or am i the first one in the history of the obsolescence of this hose to encounter this challenge? I'm wondering if I should try to replicate the bends with some barbs or tubing, allowing allowing enough rubber on both sides for engine movement (there isn't much length to play with though. There's gotta be another answer.

If the hose is going above up at all then the system is not going to flow properly. The resivoir is usually all ways higher than the pump to "gravity feed" it. I've put a few of those hoses on 22r's and never had kink problems..? Maybe need to experiment.

Go to toyotapartseast.com and look up the hose yourself, just type in your vin number. I just got a new hose a few months back and had no problem finding the hose.

What I would do is take your old hose to shop that works on hydraulics and get them to make a hose with crimp on hose ends that thread right into the pump and reservoir. Stiff bullet proof steel mesh hose that won't kink. After I think about this you may need to use a small chunk of bulk hose between the reservoir to a barb fitting on one end of the new hose if there is no threads in the reservoir.

I see you're in Portland. Just start looking on C-list for the right part or head to pick and pull. There is no shortage of Toyota trucks being parted out around here.
