1st Gen 4Runner Cup Holder

In the everlasting search for a cup holder in our 1st Gens I found one that I like. I found this on Amazon and for the price, 8 bucks, I figured it was worth testing proof of concept. It's heavy than I expected and holds my coffee mug which is all I can ask for. I like the way it folds up, I also painted it to match my interior.

Nice! I'm lazy, I hang one that goes on the door, in my glove box. Kind of in the way when my 6'4" son sits there. I'll have to keep this in mind.

The spot I chose to place it had a bunch of metal behind the door panel. It has screws passing into the metal. It feels pretty solid on the door and helps tighten up the door panel. My panel has had a bunch of the plastic plug anchors torn loose and has always had a bit of play to it. Amazon also had stainless steel versions of this for a pricey $35 which would hold up better in the long run. I just went with the plastic to test the concept. So far I really like it. It doesn't interfere at all with working the clutch which was my only concern. And it doesn't look out of place.

So a downfall with an easy fix. There are no springs in the mechanism. The bottom folds up and kind of snaps into place. The two fingers that wrap around the container are adjustable and are held in place by friction. When I first installed it that was enough. After a few days they had loosened up and one good left turn and the coffee mug took a digger. I had the technology in the glove box to fix it though. I used a few inches of shrink tube to connect the fingers and back to happy cup holder land I went.

So I picked up some black elastic the other day and upgraded my cup holder. I cut off the shrink tube I had connecting the two fingers. Cut a piece of elastic and used shrink tube to hold it to each finger. Now it's mo betta.

Do you open and close the door much with things in the holder??

I can be in and out 5 times in 10 miles.

Oh yeah. When I open the door first thing in the morning I stick my mug in the holder. Then it lives there all day. I'm in and out several times a day also.

The other day I was at the gas station and walked out and placed my cup in the holder before climbing in. Some guy walked up and asked me where I got the cup holder. I told him Amazon and showed him my modifications. He pulled out his phone and ordered two while standing there.

Classic. Every dent on the bottom of my coffee mug is from the inevitable drop into the parking lot from the same thing. Glad I'm not the only one.

This is an old thread, but I am in the process of finding these locally (Alberta, Canada).

This style of cup holder is typically used in boats so any marine store will sell them, tho at a %25 extra charge cause its "Marine"

In Canada, Canadian Tire sells the marine ones ~$14. Princess Auto (Canada's Harbour Freight) sells the same thing for $6.
