1993 4x4 rear end
I'm brand new here, and very inexperienced with the mechanical side of things. Thanks in advance for your patience and any advice. I own a 1993 pickup, 4x4, with the 22re, a 5 speed, and I believe 4:10 gears. Anyhow, there is a dull knock coming from the back end, and I'm not sure of the exact location. The sound increases in speed as the truck does (while in gear), and goes away when taken out of gear. It also gets a bit louder/more defined as I let off the gas pedal and the truck slows down while still in gear. I had a new pinion seal installed last summer, and there are no fluid leaks back there, and the level is good. I have a few questions. How loud does the knock need to get before I should be fixing the problem? It isn't obnoxious by any means, but it has my attention. I don't want to have to replace additional parts that are damaged by this current problem. Anyone know what the likely culprit may be? Also, if it's the third or entire rear, can anyone tell me where to look for one in solid shape without spending a mortgage payment? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a bad U-Joint.
Rears (diffs)usually either grind or whine when going out. I just lost a rear and a wheel / axle bearing and both sounds were grinding like bad brakes.
If for some reason you do need a Diff, look here on Yotatech in the marketplace. I just got mine for $200 shipped for the back and $250 shipped for the front. (I got both cause I am regearing while replacing the rear Diff. My 4runner was 4.30's and I put in factory 4.88's.)
