1992 4Runner 'shift on the fly'?

I have a 1992 4Runner 4x4.

Is it okay to 'shift on the fly'?

Or do I need to stop, engage 4x4, then take off?

If it is 'safe' to shift on the fly, what is the fastest I can be going when I engage 4x4?

Owner's Manual?

My owner's book says to be in 1st gear and traveling no faster than 10mph, but I change at 25 while going down the road in inclement weather. It's smart to stop when going into 4Lo from 4Hi, or you'll hear a grind.

Alright, thanks guys!

I'll just keep doing what I'm doing... stopping/going 1-5 mph when engaging 4x4

If i go from 4hi to 4lo, ill come to a complete stop.

If im going from 4hi to 2hi, ill just move the stick going around 35, but my hubs dont disengage intill i slow down or turn. But they do unlock with no problem when they do.

when going from 2hi to 4hi, ill let off the gas and slow down till i can push it in easily, so like 25 or so.

I have a 5spd manual btw.

my runner has all this info on the driver visor. 2x4 to 4x4 is ok below like 20 or so, 4x4 to 2x4 safe anytime. but you gotta remember if your in 4x4 your not supposed to go over 50 or so. the card says its safe to go to 4lo from 4x4 under 5mph. i would not shift to 4lo at any speed i always stop

I also stop when going from 4hi to 4low.
I don't stop but put the clutch in when going from:
2 to 4 hi, 4hi to 2, and 4low to 4hi. No grinding at all when I go from 4low to 4hi, but I'm also going 10mph or less when I do it. Make sure you are in the right gear when switching from low to high too.

ITs fully shift on the fly. I love it, don't even have to let off the gas to get it to go from 2wd to 4wd HI or vice versa. Although I usualy have to blip the throttle to get it into 2wd.

Stop for 4Low to 4High
I frequently run down the snowy onramp in 4High, merge, and hit 2High at 60
No problems.

according to the owners manual in my runner (90) it says that i can shift to 4hi as long as im under 55mph, and from 4hi to 4lo under 5, but as everyone says, i always stop...

and, FWIW, ive shifted into 4 hi going from the road and bombing down a trail and shifted into 4 hi at about 50 mph... and nothing is wrong with my 4wd at all...

I did try shifting on the fly into 4wd when my truck was stone cold (-15c) and it grinded pretty good. Needed the clutch for that one, worked great once it warmed up!

No matter when, I always stop and put it in or out of 4wd. I love my Toyota. I treat her good and she does the same to me.
