1991 Sr5 intermittent engine issues.

I have had this truck for 3 years now, and it has done this since the day I bought it. BUT it always eventually clears up, and once it is warmed it runs perfectly.

So I start it, it always fires right up, it will run fine for about 5 minutes at idle, then start missing like crazy, smells very rich, smokes, and usually dies unless I work the throttle like mad to keep it going. Then a few minutes later it clears up and is fine. The engine light does come on, but the local guys couldnt get their scanner to read it. Wasted $70 there. They said it had low compression, 60 lbs. (has 180K so Id say thats normal )?

Once its warmed up, it doesnt have a problem, usually. It does occasionally do this once warm however, rarely.

I use this rig for hunting and ice fishing, so I dont drive it a ton, but I want to figure out what the heck is going on.

IMO, when the temp gauge finally is at about mid point, it is gonna be fine. I am wondering if there is a temp sensor on these that may be faulty? I does seem to run better (not misfire) as much in the winter. Could be wrong , but it seems that way.

Where the heck would you guys start ?

Where did you go that doesn't know how toyota codes are read? Just paperclip between E1-TE1, turn key on, (don't start), and watch the light blink out a code. here's how.

Edit: sounds like a CSI or CTS issue. Cold Start Injector, Coolant Temp Sensor. But get the code, and troubleshoot. Don't waste time at SteveBob's autoparts getting fleeced for your cash.

Thanks Ill try that here in a few minutes, I took it to a shop here in Bagley, Mn. Guess I was fleeced. Thanks guys, I will let you know how it goes.

Am I getting 3 different codes here ? Looks like coolant sensor is a 22 code but not sure if I am reading this correctly ...

Just glanced over post, when I first read it, missed some things. I would ask for my $70.00 back as you paid for them to say they don't know how to repair vehicles.

Compression should be 155 - 170
Minimum 142
14 psi variation between cylinders

Ok after looking at it a few times I see a 22 code, then a 43 code, correct. I understand the 22 code, Ill check the wiring and sensor, but the 43 code if I am reading it correctly, is confusing. STARTER SIGNAL--NO "STA" SIGNAL TO ECU UNTIL ENGINE SPEED EXCEEDS 800RPM,...

If this actually had 60 pounds compression would it even run? I mean it runs perfect when its not missing...

There is a procedure doing a compression test. SteveBobs didn't even know how to pull codes, I wouldn't even trust there findings. I bet they didn't have WOT when doing it.
My suggestion is to re-do compression test. As for codes if you have a Factory Service Manual it will guide you diagnosing codes.

Totally agree. (what are the procedures for testing that, I do have a compression tester Ill do that tomorrow too ). Did that video work ? Thanks for the help.

Try looking here, its the shortest, clearest, code 43 tech I could find. The code 22, I would check the temp sensor wiring, plug, and at least remove, clean, and test the coolant temp sensor. Apparently 43 isn't horrible, but is a fixable issue.
