1991 22re to 1987 22ret swap

So i have what seems to be a rare opportunity. A complete 1987 factory turbo truck that i can get ahold of for a good price. It looks god awful rusted bad everywhere but i have a 91 toyota and was wondering what would have to be changed. Is it possible to just gut EVERYTHING from the complete truck and put it into the good shell i have?

Yes but for the gains you will get it is quite a lot of work.

you would need to swap the whole engine and electronics

Merge your truck harness to the new ECU just like any other swap.

transmission and transfer case the rear drive shaft flanges and shaft are heavier and the bolt patterns are different .

While this is all apart A new Clutch and hydraulics would be a given

new coolant hoses vacuum hoses new belts.

Most of the Turbo intake hoses are obsolete if they are cracked and dry rotted that gets interesting but can be custom fitted .

Custom exhaust system I know of no after market bolt on turbo down pipe that may have changed though.

A stock 3.4 will have lots more performance .

Remembering these engines were only around for 3 years .

You need the radiator to have a nipple for the coolant line for the turbo

For some reason because they are rare these engines hold there value myself I am not impressed neither was Mother Nature Taking out one of my Turbo trucks.

If your good price is the scrap price go for it.

This engine runs and you have taken it for a ride??

just how many miles??

If you have a good place to work and this is a long term for fun and to get out of the house project

Just what work does your 91 need ??

It won`t be cheap to do it correct so is the little gain in horse power worth the time and expense

In the stock engine your looking at 145 HP I think I might not have that correct but it is close.

Sure you can build quite a bit more power then the stock ECU can no longer handle the task every horse power gained is quite expensive

Your the one footing the bill so it comes down to what you want.

Check out the 22RETC forum lots of information .

Well the 91 i have cought on fire while going down the highway from the firewall back the truck is flawless and i got it for 800 bucks. I figured that i could swap the 22ret in in about 6 to 8 months and what exactly do you mean the bolt pattern is different? For mounting the trans and transfer case in the truck?
