1990 4X4 22RE 95K miles no power

I looked a 90 Single cab 4X4 22RE today. The body and interior are in excellent shape for the year and the motor and tranny seem to be in good shape except the motor has no power in 5th gear. I shifted into 5th on the highway while going up a very slight incline and I had to put the pedal to the floor to maintain 67 mph. The car also has a check engine light on and the guy thinks it's the O2 sensor. As far as I can tell it doesn't have any signs of a blown head gasket but at 95K miles I expected it to have alot more power. Any thoughts? I looked at the oil and it seems pretty clean. It didn't seem to smoke anywhere on startup. What could cause the sever lack of power and check engine light?

Well, take a paper clip, fold it out, bend it in half but dont break it. Under the hood on the passenger's side locate the "diagnosis" terminals, located aft of the battery (towards the firewall) and directly beside the fuse box. Jumper terminals TE1 and E1 in the diagnosis terminal with the paper clip. turn the ignition to "on" but dont start it. Count the number of flashes. All codes for th '92 will be two digit. If there is one code present, it will flash the number to indicate the "tens" place of the number code (ex 2) then a one second pause, then another flash(es), (ex 1). put them together and you have code 21, which is the main oxygen sensor for the 22re . If there are other codes, there will be about a 2 second pause between codes, then it will loops around again.

Also about the "loss of power", do you have larger than stock tires (most common seem to be 31x10.5s) on stock gears? I have had 31x10.5s on all three of my 22re powered Yotas with stock gears and 5th was really useless except for flat driving faster than 70 mph. Forget hills. 5th is an overdrive gear anyhow.

No, I haven't bought it yet, I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow. But the tires seem to be 30X9.50's I think.

Whoops. Sorry. I misread the part about you looking at it, not actually owning it 30x9.5s are larger than stock (stock is bout 28" ) The loss of power could also be from the oxygen sensor.

And they arent very powerful engines to begin with. 116bhp at 4800 rpm and 142 ft/tq at 2800 rpm in a 3500+ lb vehicle....

No problem, it was a lengthy post. I haven't been on here in a few years as I sold my 4Runner a few years ago but I saw this truck today and I want it. It's a 22RE with 95K original miles. No major work has been done to it but it seems to run well, no knocks or smoking. I'm in Massachusetts currently and the body has no rust on it which is amazing. The only issues are some brake pulsating and the check engine light. Here's the link:http://providence.craigslist.org/cto/1314776218.html

And yes, the guy is Spanish but he speaks pretty good English.

The story is he bought it a year ago from the original owner who was a cop.

try and get him down to $2200 or $2100

I know, I had an 87 4Runner which I sold at 222K and an 86 with about the same, the thing is this was no faster than either of those and it only has 95K miles. I got him down to $2250 which for Massachusetts is a good price. Cars go for a lot here.

tires are probibly bigger than stock. That doesnt help a 110hp motor push 4,000lbs any easier.

Look into a tune up and pull the codes if you buy it.. Those things are easy to work on.

it might of been 116fwhp rolling out the door of the factory, but I'll bet its a little tired now. I think Jay's probably closer to the FWHP figure. Probably only puts out ~90 at the wheels.

It seems to be a good deal at $2250 given that it has no major problems. The clutch seem s good and the interior and exterior are excellent for an east coast truck. I'm gonna get it as pretty much every truck for sale around here is a piece. Ill keep you guys posted as I'm sure I'll be a regular on these forums again.
