I have a first gen, no experience with the second gen rigs. Do the second gens have wider wheel base, or some other redesign feature that makes up for the lack of the removable top?

I drove my 3 year old around to Lowes, Depot, and Costco today in the Runner, a PITA getting him into and out of the back seat. It's raining this week, but as soon as WabFab ships my bikini top (hint, hint) the top is off and throwing the kid in the back seat is as easy as throwing a football, with a little more care, of course.

So, other than the rare factor, what gives?

Mike
I bought it cause I've been looking for a 2nd gen 3.4 swap candidate. This one just happened to be a 2 door and cheap. Trying something different this time. If I don't like it, I'll sell it. I've had 5 1st gen 4Runners already and still got 1 (sorta)

I don't see why they even bothered making a 2 door version. Maybe to cut costs?

I would HATE crawling through the driver's door to reach tools/ camping gear/ stuff in the back. It would drive me NUTS. I don't even think they looked any good either. Reminds me of a 2 door Blazer.

Sorry, that would be a Blazing Blazer. This is better (or not):

Since that was his last post on here and last login date was 10/2004, I would guess not.

I actually never liked the four door until seeing the two door model here(never seen one in person). That slanted side pillar styling from the first gen doesn't work as well with the second IMO. Not near as fugly as the back of the "stepside" Tundras, though.

Is the 3.4 swap easier in the 2nd gen? I've been drooling about that with my 1st gen, and understand that I will need to do a body lift or cut the hood to fit it in the engine compartment.

I think it is a cool looking rig, but I love being able to pop the top on mine.

Oh, any idea on a ship date for the bikini tops?

Thanks,

Mike

Haha, I drove my friends blazer. It has the 4.3L, damn.. that thing has some torque!

I love the 2dr 4runners, they look so much cleaner then the 4doors. Somebody needs to chop the roof on one and make it like a 1st gen

Buying a 2gen 2door and making the roof removable like the 1gen has been a plan of mine for a while. but with currently limited time and resources and 2doors very hard to find, it may be a while before i have the chance

Should be the same frame, just two doors. I think it would be sweet to have one with a rear tire carrier.

Then again, It would get stuffy in the back, so I might just opt for a 1st gen.

2door runners are awesome! my friend has a black 2dr and its not that bad to get into the back and i imo it looks much better than the 4doors!. btw the 2door has the same wheel base as a standard cab shortbox pickup (mine). my parents had the same one in 4door when i was a younger and yes it was easyer to get into the back but i the 2door is more sport and for somebody who doesn't have afamily its awesome!

I don't see the point to the 2 door 4Runner (unless it has a removable top), and I only carry 2+ passengers a couple times a year. It would only make life more difficult, in every situation. Why wouldn't you want 4 doors? I'm far more interested in functionality than looks.

When your carrying anything- tools, camping gear, coolers, groceries, bodies etc, having side access to the rear is really useful.

Every time I see one (most days I'm on the road?) I think to myself "you bought the wrong truck".

well you are right in a way. 4 door is nice for getting in the back and what not but the 2door is just looks mean imo. if i had a family and used the truck as a work truck then sure i would get the 4door but for wheeling and bootin around the 2door is perfect. my friend dosent complain about it being hard to get in the back or anything, but obviously it would be easyer with a 4door right? the removable top is nice an all but who cares if the 90 to 91 dosent have it. not that big o deal plus i like the sleek look of it. 4door is nice but i would take the 2dr any day

I imagine the 2 door would be lighter as well so with a 22re and a 5 spd. I think it would be a nice little truck.
It obviously has more room than my 1990 single cab. The back window still rolls down so I don't think it would be that much harder to access anything you were carrying.

Well, if somebody doesnt need to haul people around, then the 2dr is great!

You get the nice long truck doors, more space for the driver and passenger and you got some covered cargo room.

I would like to have a 2dr 4runner much more than a 4dr. The 4doors are so much more..."family" orientated IMO. I wouldnt need the extra doors...

Ive never found the rear doors to be all that helpfull, im used to my pickup. Ive found myself simply flipping the seat forward to get at stuff in the back seat instead of opening the door!

Thing is, there is no disadvantage to having 4 doors, have two only makes it tougher to get at the cargo area (I've removed my two back seats and just have a cargo area.

The longer the front doors, the tougher it is to get out in tight parking spaces be it at a cars at a mall or trees.

I'd be seriously bummed if I woke up and my truck had transformed into a 2 door mutant truck overnight. I'm always carrying tools, textbooks, camping gear, or fishing gear, it would be a big PITA not having rear access.

I really like the longer door/front seating area. Everytime I hop in the girlfriends 4runner I I hit my leg on the door frame, and my arm is very uncomfertable resting on the door. The lock does a great job of jabbing into the underside!

Ive never had a problem getting out of the truck because of the longer doors and ive parked in some tight places!

Different strokes I suppose.

Im used to going into the back by flipping the seat forward.

The second set of doors is nice if you are constantly loading people/large amounts of crap in and out of yer rig. I don't carry many people tho!

Id buy a 2door before a 4 door anyday! I really think they look cleaner, gives it more of a truck feel. If it had a removable top.. oh boy!
