Hello i have a 1989 toyota dlx single cab 4 cyl . I have a 88 motor in the truck should i change over to the 88 computer and wiringharness . Reason i ask the trucks kinda seen better days
Both the injector harness and alternator harness have been check mulitple times and are good .
You are changing between two different generations of trucks and the 88 injectors are a one year only injector. Stay all 89 electronics for your truck. Alternator harness may swap over but not the injector harness.
Update the truck just got the motor swap 22re as spose to . I have everything wired up and turn the key nothing . So i just go old school and make the starter work .she spins over and bust off . I play with the distributor she runs .
85-87 injectors have white tops on them. The 88 are a red top injector as the same as the 89-95 injectors are red as well but they are keyed different. You should not be able to stick an 88 injector into an 89 harness and vise versa even though I have seen it done. They each have a different resistance as well.

Here are the 3 types of injectors. The white one is 85- 87, the 88 looks just like the 89 and up but the fool proof tabs are different. I dont remember which one is which but 85-87 is 1.5-3.0 Ohms, 88 is 1.0-2.5 Ohms, and the 89 and newer are 13.4-14.2 Ohms. Do a resistance check to see which ones you have. Notice on the red injectors have a fool proof tab either above or below the pins that connect to the harness.
Like Terrys87 said the 1989 injectors were 13.4-14.2 ohms. That is because 1989 22re's did not use a solenoid resistor like the previous years. The 85-88 used a solenoid resistor because they were low resistance (1-3 ohms depending on year). If you are running an 88 computer and 88 injectors plugged into an 89 harness with no solenoid resistor that is why it is running bad. You need to run the right computer with the right injectors and with or without a solenoid resistor depending on configuration. What part number is your computer?
When useing the hanes manual . Is my truck classified as late model or early model . Because when i tested things i went off late model . In the electrical section .
Any easy way to tell me what color wire the o2 sensor is sposr to be and what harness it should be contected to . Also the knock sensor those or my to unpluged items .. everything else is correct ive had a toyota tech over look my computer injectors and vin on my engine . Its all a match for the truck . I guess a mouse ate my wires.
It would be considered a late model in the Haynes. Your O2 sensor wire harness is under the drivers seat area and will connect in the exhaust pipe near the transmission or transfer case. It will have 4 wires. If I recall right, you can just remove your door trim on the floor, lift the carpet and you will see where the harness goes thru the floor board. I don't think you have to take the seat out but you might have to. Been a while since I changed a 4 wire O2 sensor.
I've been driving it for two weeks to work. Getting 20mpg, running 60mph. Still need tie rod ends, and a basic front end rebuild. Bushings, shocks, etc.
