1988 5sp Trans problems

Well CRAP!

I think 2nd gear went out! Help me here....

I am hearing a loud knock that gets faster with engine RPM, not speed.

the knock goes away with when the clutch is engaged.

the knock is louder in 2nd gear and I feel "thuds"

I can use 1,3,4,5 without too much trouble but still hear the knocking.

No leaks, just started doing this today, 195,000 miles. I have put about 3,000 miles on it since I got it.

Thanks guys!

BTW, did a search but did not find the above.

You sure it's not your motor knocking?

I thought the same at first, but the knocking goes away when I press on the clutch.

No smoke, good power. 2nd gear is worse than all others.

I thought 5th would be the gear that would go out first 'cause it doesn't get used as much.

That's not good man, drive it till it blows or try to find a good used or rebuilt trans I suppose, unless you can do it yourself.

In your first post you said the knock goes away when the clutch is engaged which means when you are driving which would lead me to believe it could be the throwout bearing, but then you said it goes away when pressed in so maybe it could be the pilot bearing?

I think either way it's time to drop the tranny and figure it out though.

I had a chance to play with it a bit.....

With the clutch depressed, trans in 1st, the truck feels like it is slipping.
I had to pull it out of gear to keep it from inching forward.

I didn't drive it far.....but 2nd gear was a little louder with the clank/thud sound. I can shift into any gear.....?????

Does this help?

It might just need a new clutch kit, flywheel resurface and clutch master an slave cylinder.
It's hard for me to say for sure though.

I agree. Think it's now time to pull the trany and inspect the clutch...especially the T/O & Pilot bearings. Also look for broken, worn or missing springs and teeth on the pressure plate...just for issues..by that time you would want to replace all that stuff anyway while you are there.

If your problem is not there then pop your top loader cover off the trans and take a peek there. Check trans input / output shaft for wear, end play, thrust...all that as well.
