1988 4runner 22re ~ Gas leak

Hi, I was recommended by a friend to check out this yota site for some truck advice. Heres my problem, I have an 88 4runner with a gas leak, the leak is located at the top of the tank. I have accessed the location of the leak by folding the back seats up, and removing a hatch which give you a look of the top of the tank. I can see the previous owner had patched it at some point and the gas leak has now broken through.

I have tried to re-patch it recently with 'All-Seal', but the sealent seems to thin and i cant get it to hold where I want it. So I ripped it all off to try something new. Also the sealent didnt look like it had a very good foot hold, probably because I didnt clean the area very well before applying it.

Could anyone recommend me on what to use and the best way to patch it? Also what would be a good way to clean the area before applying the patch?

Im a newbie when it comes to anything vehicle wise, and my 4runner is old and rough. A mechanic told me it was best to patch it as replacing parts on this old truck would onlt lead to other problems.

I hope I can get some good info off here. If you would like pictures I could add some. pc

i would for sure replace the whole tank. thats one piece of equipment i dont want some jank repair job done to lol. you can buy a new one online for 150 -200 clams or you can go to the junk yard and get one(just be shure to get it clean!). and if you havent replaced your fuel pump lately its a good idea to do that aswell. as for that mechanic saying replacing parts leads to other problems as long as your methodical, carfull, and double check your work youll be golden.
hope this helps -rube
