1988 22RE Weird Problem Radio Not Working Even After Replacement; Hazard Lights Out

Hey everyone, weird problem here my radio stopped working in my 88 22RE a while back. I figured it was just the headunit since it was old and had been flickering on an off for a while.

Got a new Sony headunit, and took apart the panels, connected all the wires, turned on my car and.... FRUSTRATION. Nothing happened. I used a wire harness and everything seemed to be connected fine. I thought it might be the wiring I did wrong, but all the colors were matched up. What can I check to fix this? Perhaps I did the wiring wrong; with the ground wire, instead of bolting it in with a bolt to a metal area, I stripped the ends and attached it with a screw on connector to the respective black ground wire of the radio harness I ordered. Is that ok?

The weird part is that the radio cut out on the old unit when I pressed my hazard lights on a while back. The radio died, and the hazard emergency lights don't work anymore either. Anyone have any ideas I'm desperate!

GREMLINS!!!! i think you better break out the ol' multi meter and start testing wires, see if you even have power to the stereo. make sure that the ground is nice and proper....the hazard lights are a different story...i'd rather give you no advice than bad advice

Thanks for the reply I realized I posted this thread in the wrong section.. What is the best way to test the ground? The radio would sometimes flicker on and work for a day and then quit working the next, so I was thinking possible faulty wires or loose grounding..

Running your own ground will work just fine. For some reason I could never find my ground wire..something the previous owner did. I just ran my own wires for power and speakers to rule out the stock harness.

I'm not so sure about the hazards, check out the FSM in my sig and it will have a wire diagram so you can track down the problem.

Well, ow that it is finally winter up here, my radio is back to its usual in the cold temps: Have to crank the volume to hear it.

Summer it is "fine." I say fine because I think it is the original radio.

I was never a big fan of these head units, but you cannot beat it for the deal. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pioneer-DX...e-Car/17242512

Does your horn work? If not check the fuse in the engine bay. I had that happen to me once before.

According to the FSM the radio constant power feed and the Hazard switch both feed off the same fuse (15amp Haz-Horn), I would check there for a connection problem. Although they are not as prone to connection breakdown as the old glass fuse holders you are still dealing with bare metal that can corrode.
Hope this helps!

Sorry for the late reply never got email notification of all these helpful replies!

Apparently the main power wire that runs through the drivers side was bad and had to be replaced. The radio is working like a beauty now, but the hazard lights aren't working, and the horn isn't working either. The horn and hazards haven't been working for a while now.

My turn signals have been working but just recently decided to fail yesterday too! They aren't blinking on the dash or on the lights themselves I noticed this after I just had the fuel pump replaced..all these problems arghh

Horn and hazards are on the same fuse in the engine bay marked HAZ-HORN. I had somehow blown mine working in and around the radio.

Just checked the fuses and they're good still :/ The fuses for my radio were intact when they weren't working either, and it was something with the wiring that was off. Unfortunately I know **** about wiring haha.

What would be the next step for figuring out how to get turnsignals/horn/hazards working again?

im running into a similar issue here. havent started to pull too much apart yetm, just removed the stereo. there are the fuses under the dash, on the drivers side. it sounds like you checked those, though, there are also the fuses under the hood, int he black box, your horn/haz issue may lie in there. let us know if you already check this out

Good luck solving your problem, whatever it might be.

Hi poppin back in

Had some issues with power to my radio again..the latent power that the radio receives to remember basic settings such as FM presets and clock was not working. This issue was solved by disregarding the latent wire on the radio harness as it was dead. All that is required is a 12V output. I spliced the wire that provides energy to the 4runner's stock dashboard clock. This also happens to use 12V, and now the radio works like a charm.

I am still having issues with the horn and hazards! The fuses are all intact, I am thinking I'll have to rewire somehow.
