1987 turbo head
Does anyone know where to get a reman. or new head for a '87 22 RET 4x4. Any info will help. Is it possible to take my 22 RE and swap it out for a 22 RET? I already have an auto transmission in the truck. Thanks people!!

The turbo head has a larger combustion chamber to lower comp ratio and I believe has heavier duty valves (exhaust anyway) for the extra heat. Some people run the the non turbo head on the turbo motor which bumps the comp ratio up from 7:5:1 to somewhere around 8:5:1 which is fine with out too much boost. I'm doing that on my 87 turbo pickup. engnbldr's street/rv head has heavier duty stainless valves (larger too) and is all new parts for $448. That's what I'm going with.

Turbo pistons are different then 22r/22re pistons though but not much.

I have said this before and I'll say it again. The turbo head also plays a major role in the engine's compression ratio. And does have a different combustion chamber size.
IIRC the turbo head is also plumbed for the oiling system for the turbo.
IMO 52/54 CC to 82/83 CC combustion chamber is a significant change in compression.
for example, on a 350 SBC if you go from a 76cc chamber to a 58cc chamber your compression ratio would go from 8.84 to 10.72.
Now searching around here are some more specs with the KB pistons with a 56cc head (efi) = 9.7:1 with the same pistons and an 83cc head = 7.3:1.
22re compression ratio = 9.4:1 or is it 9:1 I have seen both listed.
22ret compression ratio = 7.3:1
By that research it tells me most of the compression change between the 22re and 22ret is the head combustion chamber cc change.

I've been researching this for a while now. Not for my truck, but in case I ever get a hold of an old celica/supra to run SCCA hill climbs.
The 22RTE Turbo engine was based on the later model 22RE (short block /tall head). This is a similar but entirely different block and head. The block was drilled with different oil passages to accommodate the Turbo oil requirements. The cylinder head's combustion chamber had a different shape. The piston was dished. Advertised horsepower was 145. The factory set the boost at 5.5-6 pounds, but completely stock internals survived boosts of up to 17-22 pounds, with proper fuel injection modifications. This is a testimony to the bulletproof bottom end design.
