1987 EFI Toyota Truck

My partner just got a truck for FREE, Thats right free. It is a 1987 EFI Toyota pickup truck with a 22re engine. The truck starts up fine, but runs very ruff ynuless he keep his foot on the gass. After warming up, it purrs like a kitten. Any idears.

Also, he would like to no what type brand of spark plus to get for this rig as well as an oil filter, and the type of oil you all think would be best. The rig has 200K on it now. Other then that, the truck runs fine and has plenty of power. Just at startup is the only problem.

Any help would be great.

Also, what does EFI stand for. It is the lettering on the door ? Thanks again.

I will post pics ASAP.

It's EFI. Electronic fuel injection. Meaning not carbureted. It was a big deal in the late 80's, so makers put the abbreviation on the outside of cars lol.

As far as the rough starting, it could be your cold start injector. Check out this thread for more info: http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=101537

X2 on the cold start injector.
You'll get alot of different idea's on what plugs and oil to use.
I myself use NGK plugs, Castrol oil and OEM oil filter.

Can anyone help on telling me where to look for this plug, or what it looks like, and is it hard to install. Also what does it cost. Thanks.

have your partner pick up a haynes or chiltons manual, it should have plenty of tune up information in there, spark plug gag, type of oil & filter, trans fluid, gear oil etc.

a good way to learn about basic maintenance and could save you some $$$ by doing some work on your own.

THere are two plugs in front of the engine, both deal with the cold start injector. they are under the intake manifold, they could be bad, but i guess there would be a check engine light.

Cold start injector and cold start injector time switch is for cranking the motor over only and have NOTHING to do with a rough cold idle. The air valve is the device that increases the idle during warm up on a cold motor. Usually the air valve orfice(s) get plugged up and the motor chugs at a low RPM until warm. I believe in 87 they incorporated the air valve into the throttle body vs. an externaly mounted one which were on 84 & 85 EFI models. Search for "air valve" in the search engine and you'll find picture.

Yeah you are right now that I think about it. How about the temp sensor plug on the front? I know when mine came unplugged my truck ran like crap until it warmed up. In first gear, it did the famous no power on the low end, then all of a sudden it would take off lol. Something to check out.
