1987 carbureted, want to put in 22re carbureted

Ok so I have a 1987 extended cab 4x4 manual transmission truck with the original carbureted 22r in it but it started knocking the other day and I need a quick replacement so I found a 1987 22re truck manual 4x4 with a good engine and I would love to have fuel injection but I don't have the time to do the wiring and convert the truck so I am wanting to make the 22re carbureted for ease of swapping. I have done some reading and searching and it seems that I will need the carbureted distributor put on the 22re motor and I will need to bolt on the mechanical fuel pump but other than that is it as simple as putting the carburetor on? Will I need the carbureted intake or will the 22re intake work when I take the top end efi stuff off? Also on the exhaust side is it a direct bolt up or is there a different manifold for efi? Thanks for any help!

The long block is the same with possibly the exception of the cam. I have heard that the carbed and EFI trucks got different cam profiles but I have not confirmed that firsthand. You'll need to swap your fuel pump eccentric, fuel pump, distributor, and entire intake over.

Not sure on the exhaust manifolds. They'll both physically bolt up but I'm not sure if the carbed one has the hole for an O2 sensor. Just skip the hassle and use your original.

Thanks all for the input! How much is all the efi stuff worth by itself? Because I will probably sell it to help offset the cost. I will post my progress as I go along. If anyone else has any helpful tips please let me know

Ok so scored a 1987 single cab efi 4x4 truck missing only rims and tires for $400! Gonna load it up tomorrow. I wish I could just fix this one up and park the extended cab but it was at a scrap yard and I doubt I could get a title for it.....? Anyway I'm going to try and get pictures before the days out.

I did exactly what you did... I bought a junkyard 22re and converted it to carb to work in my 87.
The exhaust manifold from the re might have an o2 sensor hole in it... Best just to use the manifold from your 87.
Honestly, the easiest thing to do is to put both motors on stands, strip down the efi motor to the long block, and then xfer all the carbed stuff over.
Id heard that the two motors might have different cams, but then I read elsewhere that it was just a myth, so I left the '94 cam in the '94 motor.
Id highly suggest doing the timing chain guides on your efi motor before you put it all together.

I tossed all the efi stuff and harness into a tupperware tub, and sold it on craigslist for $100. In hindsight, I might have held on to it.

Thanks for the reply! It's good to hear it from someone who has done it before. I'm going to try and get the truck home this week and start disassembly. I'm going to throw a new clutch in also while I'm at it.

Yeah not a bad idea... My blow 22R had a fairly new clutch so I didnt bother, but I did replace the slave.

In case you're looking for long enough bolts to put the motor on a stand, I had to get them from fastenal.

If I can be any help, dont hesitate to ask. Im no yota expert, but I went though this school of hard knovks style. Ive got this thread set to email so that I dont forget about it, since I sometimes go a long while without checking this forum.

When I had my junkyard efi motor on the stand, I did a leakdown test and the exhaudt valves were leaking... The timing guides were already broken... So i actually stripped it down to the shortblock, lapped the valves and installed new seals, new head gasket, and then xfered all tue stuff from one to the other. Yours hopefully wont require that much work.

Thank you! I'm sure I will be requiring some assistance! Yeah I need to do a compression test and a few other things before installing in mine. Supposedly it was rebuilt not many miles ago but you never know.

Ok so I am trying figure out what parts I need and the fuel sending unit for my carbed 87 has never worked so I'm wondering if the 22re fuel sending unit will work or if it is different?
