1986 4x4 truck wobble

Hello everyone. Newby to the forum. I read the thread about trucks having the wobble at 25-35 and the general concensus was front end alignment. We just got this truck for my son and it's been a project, so far. It's an 86, 4x4 with a 20R, 5 speed. It drives fine until you hit 48-55 mph and then you get a horrible wobble that goes away after 56+ mph. Could that be alignment as well? The tires are ok, but could stand to be replaced soon. I appreciate all of your assistance. Thanks.

welcome to the forums

how are you judging the tires as "okay"? Just because they look new, they could be out of balance still

the tires needing balanced would be my first thing to rule out, because that's the cheapest to get fixed; usually like $5 or $10 a tire depending on where you take it

if it still has the vibration after the tires are completely ballanced, then yes it very well could be the alignment being out, and needing to be fixed

but what I would probably do first is to crawl under the front and and check out all the steering connections; tie rod ends, the pitman arm, the idler arm; and even jack the front of the truck into the air and check the ball joints too

and to note, a bad steering stabilizer will also worsen any front end wobble you might have, so that should be something to keep in mind too

Also, check the rear u-joints as well, as bad u-joints cause high speed vibrations too

My truck had the wobbles to and they were really bad at highway speed.
turned out to be the wheel ballancing, so i took it to the local garage and a few bucks later it was perfect, felt like i was drving on air it was so smooth, i also got better throttle response as my truck wasnt fighting with the wheels and a better top speed

Yah you more or less need to start looking at all the components that affect the steering, and so on.

Jack the front up and check wheel bearing preloads, check steering linkage, wheel balancing, spring hangers in the rear for spent bushings, ALL of it-
