Hey guys i am new to toyotas....My freind has a 86 4x4 SR5 with the 22 R E engine in it witch i here is a damn good engine??? 150 thos on the engine. Its a 5 speed high/low it sifts like its brand new tranny and cutch are good. The box is junk its completly junk and rusted trough, the frame just has suface rust and still seems pretty soild.... It has bigger tires on it (wide track bajas) Looks nice!! The only problem is that it needs a new head gasket (witch i can change) but it poors antifreeze out the left front head..... common problem? I think i can get it for around 700 good or bad deal?? I really like this truck n Toyotas are the !! WEll some advice would be nice Thanks guys!

I think that is a little on the expensive side . i just bought a running truck with a lot of extra parts for less than that although it still needs work .
With the coolant leak you don`t know till you take things apart if there is any more damage . While you are in there use best do the timing chain with metal guides .
Plus all the other things that will need attention Brakes things like that etc .
That is my 2 cents

There was a price?
150k on the engine is peanuts, they'll last 400k so long as there is minimal upkeep.
Like previously mentioned, find out the source of that antifreeze leak, that's not normal (or at least I've never heard of it after trolling this board for ~six months).

I'd buy it for $700.. couple hundred bucks to do the headgasket in parts and machine work on the head, few hundred more on a box and you've got a "low imleage" truck for cheap.. its still cheaper than anything I'd find up my way (Toronto, Canada)

okay thanks head gasket kit is like 100 bucks and that's all i should need right? I can deal with the box ill just rig something up. AND ya idk it like leaks out the front side of the head......it has a good oil pressure and dont suck oil...so rings are probably good...and wut else should i look for really? thanks guys and i thought 700 was cheap? for Yotas??

yeah 700 is pretty darn cheap for a 4x4 yota, most peple wont let them go for less than 1500 reguardless of its condition, and like mentioned above, you might as well go for the timeing chain and guides (go with the metal chain guides) while your in there

welding is the cheapest. But there are some things to consider. First and foremost, do you have the means or know someone with the means of welding it properly? Second, is this mostly a trail rig?
A welded rear will chew up tires a lot quicker. If this is mostly a trail rig, then this isn't of much concern. But if it's your only means of transportation, you might want to reconsider. Nevertheless, I have some friends who swear that a welded rear drives better both on and off road than an automatic locker. Do some reading and research before deciding.

Yup goes back to the same ole welded, spool, auto lock, selectable debate and everyone has different preferences.
Free traction = welded
I also know guys including me that will weld yours up for $50 or a case a beer and acouple cans of brake clean if you do all the wrenching and I'll do all the welding
