$1200 91, 22RE - should I buy?
Hello,
I have been reading on here for quite a while now. I really enjoy the 4 runner, and was going to trade my fj40 for an 88 with a rebuilt engine (rough body). People on here told my I was crazy, so I've been looking around ever since.
I love the 40, but it's not practical and needs some work. So I have it parked in the yard, and I don't often drive it.
Anyway, A friend of mine has his 91 runner up for sale, 1200 with a plow (it's not a full plow, just a small blade that can be used for pushing small amounts of snow, but it works quite well. The truck has 460 000, a new head was installed, and new valve springs were also installed a few thousand ago. It goes through half a liter of oil in 5000 kilometers. There are some signs of cancer (the rear quarter panels are rusted above the tires).
I'm just not sure if I should take the plunge or not.
I've got the cash in my hand, and am wondering that others think?
Thanks,
Andrew.

Have you seen how much they are worth now the new FJ Cruisers are out??
Hold on...sell your FJ 40 to me!! I'll give you 1200 for it! :-)

I want to keep the 40, but I want something I can comfortably drive in the winter, and would be able to take on long trips. The 40 has some issues, and would be way to expensive to take for a road trip...

An engine advertised as "rebuilt" shouldn't be burning oil. Granted, a quart every oil change ain't much but the whole idea of a rebuild is to bring the engine back to new condition or close to it. Something was probably overlooked in the replacement of parts or during reassembly.
A 400k old 2G 4runner with body cancer and an engine needing a re-rebuild is only going to be worth maybe $400-600 here in AZ.
Minus the snow plow, of course.
You might keep looking. Or talk him down.

Sorry, miss communication...
The one I am looking to buy is not the one advertised as having a "rebuilt" engine...The rebuilt engine (88 4 runner) I was going to trade for the FJ40 - but I don't want to trade...
Instead of doing a trade, I was looking at buying the 91 with 400 odd thousand k, which burns approx half a liter of oil ever 5000 k.
1200 would include the plow and winch setup - the winch is only a small 2000lb winch which has been added to work the plow. There is only minor cancer on the rear fender walls - sorry I don't have any pics right now...
but yeah, opinions welcome. I do see these types if runners going for around 2500-4000 k here in Canada, I dn't know what is realistic though...

Get It !!
That is a great configuration in a G2 4Runner, I looked and looked for one, and they are so hard to find, i finally gave up! I'd say $1200 is a steal, and the 4cyl/5spd edition of that 4Runner would be awesome to own!! The cheapest G2/22re/5sp i ever saw was $3500, but it was 7 states away in the middle of winter... just couldn't pull it off.
BUY IT, but talk him down to $1000

Yep, I bought it - except I paid 1000, and I got the unfortunate 3vze, but it has just had the head gaskets done and it's riding on 31's.
I'll take some pics later....I think I'm going to pick it up on Monday.

if a 22re can grow into a 3vze, then what would the 502ci engine grow into? for that matter, if you put a 4runner and a seqoia together, do they produce a rav4?

the person I was buying the runner off of had two and he wasn't sure which one he was going to sell...And I lost the plow, as the plow was mounted on the 22RE...
Oh well. It's till a nice truck.
