Weird intermittent clutch issue - SR5
Hey folks, hoping someone will know what the issue is here. Bought my '85 SR5 pickup (2wd, 22r, 4-speed) a year ago. Ever since the first month I owned it I've had this issue: every now and then while riving, I'm suddenly completely unable to change gears. When this happens, I have to turn the truck off for about five minutes, and then it's fine.
The problem got really bad about 3 months in, to the point I couldn't get a mile down the road without it happening. I saw that my master cylinder was leaking so I had it changed. That mostly fixed it, but the problem was still happening now and then for a while. Then, mysteriously, it stopped happening for a long time. And now? It's back!
I did take the truck back to the mechanic after the master cylinder was changed, but since they couldn't replicate the problem they told me everything was fine -- in other words that I was just nuts and imagining the problem? OK. Thanks dudes!
Any help is really appreciated. Would love to solve this without it costing a fortune, but I suppose that's always the case...

I would suspect the slave cylinder, air in the lines, or even the clutch bracket having a crack in it and letting it flex and not pushing the rods far enough to operate. As long as the problem is actually from the pedal to the slave cylinder, it should not be an expensive or difficult fix. A couple of times when I have changed a master cylinder, I did have to adjust the nut on the back side to allow that rod push further.

Common practice is to change the Clutch master and slave at the same time.
I have no idea why shutting off the engine helped at all .
Only in this case
It might be the clutch release bearing some how gets stuck on the input shaft as that spins when the engine is turning .
Any strange noises when this happens ??
