um.. my muffler exploded...
well i was driving down the road at a constant 35 or so, just passing one of the few "thug" infested gas stations here when i heard a hell of an explosion and my damn truck moved...! honestly it sounded like a shotgun so i down shifted and hauled ass lmao. i stopped at a drive through a few blocks down and got out to check then i noticed my exuast was considerably louder, then a car full of ppl that were pulling out of the gas station i was passing got to the red light right by me and proceded to tell me that something underneth exploded, so i looked and seen this!
now i suspect that running rich will cause something to this effect over a long term but i'm not rich, no black smoke or smoke of any kind, other then if i forget and pump it to start after it already warmed up then i get a very small puff of black then nothing. so wtf? i'm running no cat, pipe in the place and just what was the muff then out the drivers side behind the tire. any ideas?
oh and btw its a '86 yota truck 2.4l 2bbl

backpressure is about the only thing I know of to cause exhausts to explode... you know the old potato in the tailpipe trick, but even then your exhaust would have to be pretty well blocked to cause that kind of backpressure...

no sherlock. nah j/k, all in fun. I think i'm gonna go with the meijer special, those damn cherry bomb things, and see what happens. also anyone know the pipe size? i'm fairly sure its 2"

yea i was thinking that maybe one of the baffles came loose and blocked it all at once and boom. all i know is its spread open now and scared the outta me.

how long was the truck running I have alot of back fire when I first start the truck and it only back fires when I am decelerating.
I also do not have a cat and have thought about installing one if it would help stop the bangs that come out for the first mile from home every morning.

On another note, I do belive the size is 2", but you might want to consider going 21/2" from the back out.

Replace the muff. then add an oversized chrome Meg to the tailpipe, and make sure it hangs out far enough to be seen.
It'll keep the "Thugs" at bay when you cruise down the avenue.
2" or 2 1/4" pipe.

I've heard of people getting too much unburnt gas into the muffler, and having that ignite. But I don't know if that's what caused your problems.
But that was their fault, sucking gas throw & igniting it just for fun.

This is a very common misnomer in engine circles! What you are experiencing
is an after fire, not a back fire. A true back fire would have gases blowing
back through the induction system - NOT a good thing! I don't know why
the phenomena you are experiencing has become commonly known as a 'back'
fire, but there you go. I would guess that your weak inlet valve spring
is the most likely cause, as the engine must be drawing some fuel in when
coasting and this is no doubt collecting in the exhaust. To rule out exhaust
restriction try running it with the muffler removed and just a short length
of pipe in its place. The second most likely is a sticky exhaust valve when
hot. In more sophisticated engines there can be other causes for after
firing, such as incandescent carbon, late valve timing etc., but I think
your problem is much simpler.
